We take a look at the salaries of a car guard and even other security guards employed at various places in South Africa. Security service is a booming industry in SA. This includes personal security, security for institutions, residential buildings, offices and cars. To standardise minimum wage across the sector, the Department of Employment and Labour has planned to lay a minimum wage scheme for the people employed in this domain. These rates will come into effect from March 2, 2023, to February 28, 2027.

Salary of Car Guard in South Africa
This agreement applies to all those who are engaged in the private security sector in SA. The ambit of sectors encompassed in this agreement includes guarding or protecting fixed property, goods, people and employees along with a car guard, in-house security contractors and other non-standard service arrangements. The wages paid to private security employees are categorised under two main groups and can be calculated as monthly or hourly pay.

Areas 1 & 2: Alberton, Belbille, Benoni, Bloemfontein, Boksburg, Brakpan, Camperdown, Chatsworth, Durban, East London, Germiston, Goodwood, Inanda, Johannesburg, Kempton Park, Kimberly, Klerksdorp, Krugersdorp, Kulis River, Mitchell’s Plain, Nigel, Oberholzer, Paarl, Pietermaritzburg, Pinetown, Gqeberha, Tshwane, Randfontein, Randburg, Roodepoort, Sasolburg, Simon’s Town, Somerset West, Springs, Stellenbosch, Strand, The Cape, Uitenhage, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging, Westonaria, Wonderboom and Wynberg.

Area 3: It covers all the other areas.
For Areas 1 & 2, the monthly wages of car guards range from R5,197 to R9,266 or R26.65 to R47.62 per hour. This includes all sorts of employment in this sector. For all the other areas, the monthly wages range from R5,197 to R8,193 or R26.65 to R42.02 per hour. Note that the starting or minimum wage is the same for both these categories. Additionally, the extra allowances for night shifts will range from R6 per shift to R8 per shift. This will help standardize the entire industry and prevent the exploitation of the workforce.
