While there are not many details available on the Suzuki electric car, there are good chances that the carmaker will leverage its tie-up with carmaker giant Toyota
It has come to light that after staying away from the EV industry all this while, Suzuki has finally decided to come up with its all-electric car by the year 2025. With this, the renowned small car manufacturer has become the latest manufacturer to jump on to the EV bandwagon. The cost of the upcoming electric car from Suzuki would be USD 8,700 (approx INR 6.5 lakh).

The announcement to enter the electric car world was made by Toshiro Suzuki, President, Suzuki Motor Corporation during the launch event of the latest generation S-Cross. It may be noted here that Suzuki has so far stayed away from the electric car market as it has not required to have electric vehicles in its fleet to keep its average CO2 emission levels under check. This is simply because its models have been equipped with relatively low-displacement engines and have a lightweight construction.

Another highlight of Suzuki’s fleet is that all its models on sale in Europe are equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Also, thanks to its technical partnership with Toyota to manufacture Swace estate and Across SUV, the carmaker even offers full-hybrid and plug-in hybrid models in its portfolio. Going forward, Suzuki could make use of this partnership with Toyota for the development of new electric vehicles. While it is not clear if the current partnership with Toyota would even lead to the co-development of electric cars, Suzuki could make use of electric motor and battery technology used on the Toyota bZ4x SUV.
In fact, Suzuki could even make use of the strategy that Subaru has followed by introducing a rebadged version of the bZ4x under the name of Solterra. Visually, both the vehicles are a lot like each other, while their specifications are exactly the same. Meanwhile, with the fuel prices on a rise, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has been focused on introducing CNG variants of its existing models. Speaking to media, RC Bhargava, Chairman, has said, “Unfortunately, we will not feel happy if we can (sell) 300 or 400 or 500 or even 1,000 cars (a month). For some reason, we have gone too much higher volumes, and volumes in 100s and even 1,000s, are very good, but they leave us a little unexcited…So we have to see if I start selling EVs I would like to sell maybe 10,000 EVs in a month or something like that,” Bhargava said.
