Here in this video, a Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 crashes at speeds of about 160 kph. Both the rider and motorcycle survive the crash without catastrophic injuries. This incident also highlights the importance of proper riding gear.
Motorcycle riders in India are increasingly having access to performance motorcycles with the recent surge of mid-capacity motorcycles in the country from the likes of Bajaj, KTM and even Royal Enfield. While these machines are capable of pretty serious performance, most riders in India haven’t been able to upgrade their skill level to ride these motorcycles, simply because we weren’t used to fast motorcycles even a few years ago. And the really fast motorcycles were simply not affordable.
With access to motorcycles with decent performance, you also need good riding gear to keep you protected in case of an accident or a crash. That’s another area where Indian riders really need to invest in as most simply overlook the importance of good riding gear. Here we have an incident of a high-speed motorcycle crash on a highway involving a Royal Enfield Continental GT 650. This incident only goes onto prove the importance of good riding gear and safe riding too.
This video was uploaded by the Youtube channel ‘Rider Unknown’, and it begins as a normal riding vlog. After what was a brief meeting at a highway dhaba, the riders can be seen cruising down the highway, perhaps on their way home. It is at this point where the vlogger can be seen riding his Continental GT 650 with the throttle wide open at speeds well above 120 kph. Suddenly, the rider encounters a rough patch on the road and with the motorcycle at speeds of about 160kph, the rider loses control and after a few wobbles, the rider crashes to the ground and drags himself along the road.

The rider was thankfully wearing decent riding gear which included a riding jacket, boots, elbow guards and knee guards, and that is what really saved his life probably. He was however not wearing gloves and he has thus sustained serious injuries to both his hands. As for the motorcycle, although the Continental GT has taken a fair bit of damage, its not catastrophic. Crashing at such high speeds, there are only damages to the exhaust cans and rear tail section with some more damages to the front on the headlights, rear-view mirror and windscreen.

This also goes a long way to highlight the build quality of Royal Enfield motorcycles to have survived such a high speed impact. The repair bill on the motorcycle wouldn’t be too extravagant. The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650 are the most powerful bikes in their segment. In terms of price, it competes against the KTM Duke 390 and Kawasaki Ninja 300. It is also the most powerful Royal Enfield that has ever been produced. It uses a 648cc, parallel twin engine which churns out 47 bhp and 54 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox and it also comes with a slipper clutch.
