Toyota has been betting big on hydrogen as the alternate fuel for automotive applications for a while now.
Rowan Atkinson aka Mr Bean was recently spotted driving the hydrogen-powered Toyota GR Yaris H2 concept at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2023. Atkinson is a popular automobile aficionado which is why he owns and reviews some of the most exotic automobiles on the planet. Toyota has not been so active in the electric vehicle space. They have been focusing more on hydrogen as an alternative fuel to curb vehicular pollution and keep up with the stringent emission norms. In fact, it also showcased the Corolla Cross Hydrogen concept vehicle at the Indian Auto Expo 2023. This Yaris has a similar powertrain and is undergoing testing for motor sporting.

The Yaris H2 concept has a 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged engine in which hydrogen is sprayed into the combustion chamber directly as an alternative fuel to gasoline/petrol. Essentially, the entire configuration remains unchanged apart from the necessary calibration needed for fuel management. The exhaust pipe of this concept spits just water vapours making it ideal for the environment.

What We Think
The global automobile industry is desperately looking for alternative solutions to coal burning and pollution-emitting fuels. In the last few years, electric cars have emerged as the most feasible and widely adopted method to tackle the issue of vehicular pollution. You would be surprised to know that hydrogen cars have been in production in low numbers for almost a decade now. But due to some inherent challenges with the storage of hydrogen gas, the trend never really caught on. It would be interesting to see if Toyota is able to change that going forward.
