Renault has said that they have begun work on electric vehicles in India and hope to price the Kwid Electric under Rs. 10 lakhs to make it accessible to more people.
After the launch of the Triber, it is the Renault Kwid Electric that is probably next headed to our shores. Renault has already launched the Kwid electric in China and in an interview with Times of India, Renault has confirmed that they have started work on electric vehicles for India as well. Furthermore, Renault hopes to price Kwid Electric under Rs. 10 lakhs here in India.
The company is of course aware of the lack of infrastructure needed to support electric vehicles in India. However, they are willing to put efforts in setting up an ecosystem, of course with the support of the government. If Renault achieves to price the Kwid electric below Rs. 10 lakhs, it will undercut the Maruti Suzuki WagonR Electric by Rs. 2 lakhs. The Wagon Electric which is expected to arrive next year will likely be priced around Rs. 12 lakhs.
As for the Renault Kwid Electric, it will have a driving range of 250 km, good enough for city runabouts. It will also come with fast charging setup which will allow its owners to top-up the batteries up to 80% in just 50 mins. However, a full charge will require about 4 hours. The Kwid electric is based on Renault-Nissan’s CMF-A platform which also underpins the Kwid and the recently launched Triber. When launched, the Kwid electric will be the company’s smallest EV, even sitting below the Renault Zoe in the company’s global lineup.

The Renault Kwid Electric looks a lot similar to the new Kwid facelift that is expected to arrive in a few months time. While it retains the basic profile of a Kwid, it gets a completely new face and bumper design. There’s also a new split headlamp setup in keeping up with latest trends of headlamp design. The bumpers have been reprofiled and look lot more sharp and aggressive than before.

On the inside, the Kwid electric will have an 8” touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. It will also get some internet enabled connected car features and voice control time this around. Once launched in India, the Renault Kwid Electric will rival the likes of the WagonR electric and the Tiago electric. If the price is really under Rs. 10 lakhs, Renault might have a winner in their hands.
