Renault India has been busy readying the Kaptur for its India debut. The Kaptur is a small SUV/crossover similar in design to the Captur sold in Europe. Compared to the Euro-spec Captur, the Renault Kaptur is slightly bigger in dimensions and is built on a different platform as well. The upcoming Renault small SUV will sit above the Duster in the manufacturer’s lineup. Expect the launch to take place around the festive season of 2017 at a starting price of around Rs. 10 lakhs. Renault Kaptur India Launch Date
Model | Expected Launch Date |
Renault Kaptur SUV Launch in India | October, 2017 |
Test units of the Kaptur have been spied on Indian roads on multiple occasions. Our guess is that the Renault Kaptur India launch would take place around festive season of 2017. It may be noted that the Duster, thanks to the advent of new rivals, is fast losing its popularity. Even though Renault recently introduced a facelift, the need of the hour is an all-new vehicle. And the Kaptur looks really potent to lock horns with the likes of the Hyundai Creta. The SUV is sold as ‘Kaptur’ in Russia and ‘Captur’ in Brazil. In India, it is likely to be sold under the ‘Captur’ moniker.
The Renault Captur (Kaptur) was on display at Renault’s pavilion at the Sao Paulo Auto Show 2016. Its appearance marks the Captur’s debut on South American soil. It has gone on sale in Brazil at a starting price of BRL 80,000. Unlike the Indian market, the Kaptur for Brazil gets petrol engine options.

Variants | Petrol | Diesel |
Renault Kaptur RxE | Rs. 10.20 lakh | Rs. 11.17 Lakh |

Renault Kaptur RxZ | Rs. 13.10 Lakh | Rs. 14.50 Lakh |
The Captur is more premium than Duster. So, in India, it will be priced higher and will give Renault India presence in a higher segment which is Rs. 10 Lakh to Rs. 15 Lakh. With such a pricing, the Kaptur will command a slight premium over the Duster. Indirectly, it will also rival the Tata Hexa and the Mahindra XUV500.
The new Renault Kaptur has a spacious interior. It has a ground clearance of 204 mm and the approach and departure angles are 20 degrees and 31 degrees respectively. All this means that the new Kaptur is considerably rugged for a soft-roader. For the Russian market, Renault offers the Kaptur Small SUV with 114 bhp 1.6 L Petrol and 143 bhp 2.0 L Petrol engines. However, for its Indian innings, we expect the Kaptur to borrow its engines from the Duster. The Kaptur will also get an optional four-wheel drive system.

Renault Kaptur India – Engine & Transmission
As we said, the Kaptur is likely to share its engines with the Renault Duster. This means that the Renault Kaptur India-spec model will offer a 1.5-litre Petrol and a 1.5-litre Diesel engine. While the 1.5-litre Petrol engine gets a 5-Speed manual gearbox, the Diesel engine gets a 6-Speed unit. It is not for sure but the Diesel might get a 6-Speed AMT Automatic model sometime after the Kaptur’s India launch. The Kaptur also offers a 4WD system in international markets. In India, however, it might not get a 4wd model in India, at least not at the time of the launch. Mileage should be roughly 13 KMPL for the Petrol model and 17 KMPL for the Diesel.
