There are many reports floating around on the internet regarding the launch of the Tata Nano EV. Nano, as you might remember, was the most inexpensive car in the country a few years ago. The aim of Tata Motors was to offer almost every Indian an opportunity to own a car. Hence, the price point was around Rs 1 lakh at the time of the launch. However, the tag of being the cheapest car in the world didn’t sit too well with the potential buyers. Hence, the demand for the compact car remained low. Finally, Tata had to pull the plug on the Nano in 2018 after a decade of existence since 2008.

The reports on the internet regarding the resurrection of the Nano in an electric avatar are doing rounds. In fact, some people have even associated this image with it. However, we must clear the air here. This is actually a Toyota Aygo X which was showcased a couple of years ago. It was designed for the European market where it will be manufactured as well. In fact, it won’t even make it to our shores. The entry-level car segment in India is incredibly competitive and the Maruti Suzuki products have a stronghold there.

What We Think
We know that Tata Motors is focusing a lot on EVs. In fact, it currently has over 80% market share in this category. The Nexon EV is the prime contributor to this number. In addition, the Tigor EV and Tiago EV have been doing their part as well. Going forward, we are expecting the electric version of the Punch to launch soon. Judging by the popularity and success of the ICE version, the Punch EV could also take the market by storm. Let us wait and watch how things pan out in this regard.
