Rejoice, Land Rover fans! The iconic British SUV maker will soon bring the Range Rover Velar to India. This car shares its underpinnings with the Jaguar F-Pace, the XF and the XE. It will be coming to India via the CBU (Completely Built Unit) route. This means it will attract heavy taxes. The Velar was recently spotted in India. The spy images are a proof enough that the launch isn’t too far in the offing. You can find out the spy images along with the official photos of the the upcoming Range Rover SUV in this post below. Please read on for more on the Range Rover Velar India launch details.
The Range Rover Velar was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show 2017. The car features an all-new interior design, utilising two 10-inch touchscreens to minimise the usage of buttons (more on this later). The Range Rover Velar sits between Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport internationally. Hence, expect the Range Rover Velar India pricing to reflect that positioning too. The Range Rover Velar is most road-biased car from Land Rover till date. With that said, here’s a look at all the details regarding the Range Rover Velar India launch date, price and more.
Range Rover Velar India Launch Date
Launch Date | November/December 2017 |
The Range Rover Velar India launch will take place near the end of 2017. This has been confirmed by Rohit Suri, the MD and President of Jaguar Land Rover India. We think the Range Rover Velar India launch will take place either in the festive season i.e. November 2017 or around Christmas i.e. December 2017. Expect the car’s order books to open then, followed by deliveries some time later. Also, do expect to see the car at the Auto Expo 2018 too.
Range Rover Velar Price in India
Minimum Price | ₹ 80.00 lakh |
Maximum Price | ₹ 1.20 Crore |
The above pricing is just indicative and not final. If the price here looks steep, it is because it accounts for the high taxes that Range Rover Velar will attract when it comes to India via the CBU route. However, internationally, the Range Rover Velar has been priced between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport. Expect the same trend to continue once the Range Rover Velar India launch takes place. To give you some perspective, the Range Rover Evoque prices start from Rs 42.36 lakh (ex-showroom) while those of Range Rover Sport start from Rs 89.43 lakh (ex-showroom). That gives Land Rover wide enough room to position the Range Rover Velar in its India lineup too.
Range Rover Velar Specifications
Petrol
Engine | 2.0-litre turbo I4/3.0-litre supercharged V6 |
Power | 247BHP/375BHP |
Torque | 365Nm/450Nm |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
The Range Rover Velar internationally comes with two petrol engines – a 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder unit and a 3-litre supercharged V6. The smaller engine has a peak power output of 247BHP and peak torque output of 365Nm. The bigger engine has a peak power output of 375BHP and peak torque output of 450Nm. Both engines come mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox which has been sourced from ZF. We expect Land Rover to launch the Range Rover Velar in India with the smaller petrol engine initially, following up with the launch of the bigger, more powerful engine some time later.
Diesel
Engine | 2.0-litre turbo I4/2.0-litre twin-turbo I4/3.0-litre turbocharged V6 |
Power | 178BHP/237BHP/296BHP |
Torque | 430Nm/500Nm/700Nm |
Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
The Range Rover Velar comes with three diesel engines – two four-cylinder options and one V6. One of these four-cylinder engines is a twin-turbocharged unit too. The less powerful of the four-cylinder engines displaces 2 litres, is turbocharged and makes peak power of 178BHP and peak torque of 430Nm. The twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine also displaces 2 litres but makes peak power of 237BHP and peak torque of 500Nm. The baddest engine of them all, the V6, is a turbocharged unit. This engine sports peak power output of 296BHP and peak torque output of 700Nm. All three engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox sourced from ZF. Just like the petrol engines, we expect Land Rover to Bring Range Rover Velar to India with smaller four-cylinder motors first, followed by the bigger V6 engine.

Range Rover Velar Exterior Design Review
The Range Rover Velar’s design is quite neat, clean and most importantly, taut. These attributes make the car feel purposeful, capable and agile. The car’s hood as subtle creases and the hood outline leads seamlessly into the character lines of the car on the either side. The wheel arches are not bulging like on an SUV, letting one know that this car is a road-going car and not a true-blue off-roader.
The styling elements up front make this car stand out such as the narrow pull-back headlamps, wide grille and the big air dam. On the side, the nine-spoke wheels look striking while the roofline of the car looks inspired by Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport.
The rear is where this car looks quite athletic. The wrap-around taillamps go from one end to the other. The number plate housing is in the tailgate, flanked by Land Rover and Velar badges on either side. The rear bumper sports a skid plate with one exhaust tip on either side. These exhaust tips are partially outlines by a brushed aluminium insert on the skid plate. A nicely executed design, this one.
Range Rover Velar Interior Design Review
The real highlight of the Range Rover Velar is its interior. It is neat, clean and devoid of any buttons. The interior is highlighted by two touch sensitive touchscreens on the centre console (more on them in a bit). The steering wheel also has, what look like touch sensitive areas, to trigger functions from the wheel itself. The instrument cluster itself is a digital unit measuring 12.3 inches and has three modes – dual dial, single dial and extended.
The A/c vents are rectangular in shape and are quite narrow. The interior features dual-tone colour finish. The dashboard gets piano black inserts in between the centre and right side A/c vents. Let’s come to the centre console of the dashboard, which is its piece de resistance. There is a 10-inch infotainment unit on the dashboard and a similar unit below it. The unit below the infotainment system is an interesting piece.
In the Range Rover Velar, you get to activate various functions such as toggling A/c controls. Moreover, if you play music on the infotainment unit, the second display will show the music controls instead of the dash-mounted display. Other functions such as controlling heating/cooling in the seats, etc. are controlled by this secondary display. This helps give the display a neat, uncluttered look.
