Porsche has announced that they would be launching the Taycan electric supercar in India by March-2020 with a probable showcase at the 2020 Auto Expo.
At the launch of the Porsche Macan facelift earlier this week, Porsche made a rather big announcement. Heard of Porsche Taycan before? If its not a familiar Porsche name, then for your imformation, the Taycan is the first all-electric supercar to come out of Stuttgart. Yes, such is the day when even Porsche had to go electric! But it was inevitable and we might as well grow an acceptance for the future. However, the news is that Porsche will be bringing this Taycan to India as early as March 2020, with a probable showcase at the 2020 Auto Expo!
For any sportscar manufacturer, we hate it when they adopt the EV way. When Porsche came out with the Cayenne, the world thought that was a blasphemy. Porsche was the first of any sportscar manufacturer to have an SUV. However, it was because of the profits earned from the Cayenne that Porsche could build the Carrera GT in 2003. Could this mean that electric cars be number generators for such brands, and the profits from them be used to build more focused cars? Well, we can certainly hope so.
Coming back to the Taycan, it is based on a new J1 platform and takes inspiration from the Mission E Concept. It has already been spotted testing at the Nurburgring Nordschleife and also on the street of Shanghai, China. Although Porsche hasn’t revealed any technical details about the Taycan, it is expected to be powered by two electric motors capable of producing around 600 horsepower.
Porsche claims that the Taycan will be able to do the naught to 100 kph sprint in just 3.5 seconds and should have a range of about 500 km. They are also claiming that it should have the handling dynamics of the 911, and while that’s a pretty steep claim, we expect oodles of torque to be the dominating experience like with all electric cars. Porsche is also aiming for a sub-8:00 minute lap time at the Nürburgring. They are also working on an 800-volt fast charging setup that should give the Taycan 100 km of range in just 4 minutes.

The design is quite identifiable as a Porsche and seems like a more futuristic Panamera. The way its sculpted around the headlamps, seems to have come directly from the Mission E Concept. In fact, Porsche claims that the production version will indeed look a lot like the concept and will slot in between the Cayenne and the Panamera. Interestingly, the test mules of the Taycan were seen with exhaust tips. Were they fake?

Porsche is only aiming for 20,000 units of the Taycan annually, for the initial year at least. Later, Wagon and Crossover body styles will also follow. The Porsche Taycan will have its globally debut in September at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show and sales will begin in December. When it comes to India in March next year, it will be the first electric sportscar in the country.
