Kolkata Police has started a crackdown on people doing stunts in cars. Now, people hanging out of a car’s sunroof will attract fines.
Sunroofs have become a standard feature on most upmarket cars sold in India. Thanks to movies and social media, people can’t stop popping out of sunroofs or putting their kids through them. This has led to a few unfortunate incidents as well. Furthermore, some users go overboard with sunroof stunts for social media photos and videos. Now, the police have decided to take action against such dangerous behavior.

Violators Fined Under Section 184 (F) of the Motor Vehicles Act
A campaign by Kolkata police last year saw the cops cracking down on such violators. While this move was made by the Lalbazar police force, teams at other locations followed suit. Similarly, the traffic police in various other cities have started taking action against such violators. In November 2022, the Mumbai police issued a hefty challan to a woman hanging out of the sunroof of a moving Jeep Compass. It is unclear under which sections the challan has been filed against the woman. People popping out of sunroofs while the car is in motion are being fined even in other cities of the country. Basically, if any stunts are captured by CCTVs or traffic cams as proof, the traffic police can impose a fine under Section 184 (F) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
As per the amended MVA, motorists can be fined under Section 184 (F) if they are found “driving in any manner that falls far below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver and where it would be obvious to a competent and careful driver that driving in that manner would be dangerous, shall amount to driving in such manner which is dangerous to the public.” The violators can be fined for Rs 5,000 for the first offense and Rs 10,000 for subsequent violations.

Wrongful Behavour Promoted on Social Media
It is expected that the traffic fines will discourage car occupants who pop their heads out of the sunroof while the vehicle is in motion. It’s important to mention here that such seemingly harmless fun is not worth risking your safety. Often, it becomes difficult for drivers to notice low dangling wires or kite strings, which can cause grave injuries to the head, neck, and torso. Also, the tires of the vehicles that pass you at a speed can often send small stones flying at you. Hence, it’s important for every vehicle occupant to stay completely inside and always buckle up, irrespective of where he’s seated.
It is to be noted that any stunts with vehicles put multiple lives in danger. While sunroofs seem fun, they have caused severe accidents in recent years. Moreover, promoting such antics on social media, where images and videos of such activities can get lakhs of views, spreads a very wrong message. We hope that the police forces across the country start taking strict actions against anyone found flouting traffic rules.
