Piaggio is one of the major players in the commercial vehicle segment and has been quite keen on entering the small car segment with a new concept called as Piaggio NT3. During November 2010 we had reported of the company’s plan of launching the NT3 and now after almost six months, the brand is in news again for the same vehicle.
The Italian two wheeler maker is all set to introduce the NT3 in two models with different engine capacities by the end of 2012. The car has been designed specifically for price sensitive markets like ours and rival Bajaj ultra low cost (ULC) vehicle and Tata Nano.
Ravi Chopra, chairman and managing director, Piaggio Vehicles, stated, “The demand for small cars will be large in the densely populated countries and cities. These cars also will be able to travel to places where the road infrastructure is not the best. The application movement version of the NT3 will be future Ape, its light commercial vehicle. The small car concept is based on the Vespa and Ape architecture,”
He further added, “Our investments in Baramati plant are targeted towards preparing for future. The engine facility is set up with the idea that the company can engineer its own four-wheeler engines and to create a hub for these diesel engines that can cater to Piaggio’s global requirements.”
