Electric car proponents make sure that they always highlight the maintenance cost as a major attraction for EVs in every discussion.
An Ather electric scooter owner has shows the details of the maintenance cost of his EV and shared them online. Electric cars are supposed to be the future of mobility. Nations are trying to reduce their carbon footprint to meet the ambitious climate targets in the coming decades. As a result, vehicular emissions play a crucial role in ensuring that we are able to meet the environmental goals. While electric cars are all the rage, especially in emerging nations like India at the moment, electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers are often sidelined. But in the meantime, we have had some gigantic players in this space and Ather is certainly one of them.
Shocking Maintenance Cost of Ather Electric Scooter
An X user, Eshwar Nilakantan shared a screenshot of the service cost of his electric scooter at Ather’s official service centre. It is a job card of the components along with the labour charges. The parts that were installed include Fan, PFC-G1, Fan, PSFB-G1, Tie Wrap Bodyworks and Motor Pulley. The total came out to be a whopping Rs 8,002 including the labour charges. That is more than even some mid-size cars. This post was uploaded with the caption, “They said EVs have a low maintenance fee because it has fewer moving parts.” Clearly, the owner is shocked by these costs. I must mention here that the owner confirmed that there were no damaged parts due to accidents or any other reason. The EV showed a P014 error and the service centre staff diagnosed multiple problems.
In any case, these are particularly high costs for an electric scooter. Maintenance cost is a key point of discussion when comparing the ownership costs of ICE and electric cars. But if this is the kind of expense one has to bear to own an EV, there aren’t all that many benefits left in favour of electric vehicles. Needless to say, the netizens were surprised by this and they showered some witty and sarcastic comments. One user said, “Woah, Competing with cars now”, while another commented, “Just 13k kms done? and 8k bill… My car has much lower maintenance”, another X user wrote, “Eventually greedy dealerships & their owners in India ensure ownership full of troubles irrespective of the tech in your vehicle.”
Our View
I would like to suggest that this might not be true for everyone. Hence, you must not make the mistake of believing that every Ather electric scooter owner will experience this kind of maintenance cost. Still, the fact that one EV owner had to go through this hints at possible issues that could crop up in EVs despite the claims that electric vehicles have fewer moving parts and lower ownership and maintenance costs. I would urge our readers to do their due diligence before deciding to buy any vehicle, especially EVs.
