It looks like green mobility solutions are ready to take over the entire automobile industry and more alternatives to pollution-emitting petrol and diesel are emerging.
Olectra Greentech has unveiled a hydrogen bus that can run 400 km on a single charge. Greener mobility solutions are quite prevalent in the commercial or public transportation domains in India. Back from the times when Delhi Transport Buses formed one of the largest fleets of CNG buses in the world, to electric three-wheelers and rickshaws that run in various parts of the country today, India has always been at the forefront of adopting greener mobility solutions. Now, Olectra Greentech has unveiled a hydrogen bus that is touted as the next big thing when it comes to urban public mobility.

For the uninitiated, the USP of hydrogen vehicles is the fact that they emit only water vapour as exhaust gas. There are no carbon or nitrogen-based toxic gases which are not only harmful to humans, but also to the environment. Essentially, a fuel cell powers the bus that is fuelled using hydrogen. Now, hydrogen is an energy-dense gas that is around 4 times more energy dense than traditional diesel fuel. Hence, better performance can be achieved using hydrogen as a fuel.

This low-floor bus accommodates the hydrogen cylinders on the roof and can travel 400 km on a single fuel tank. More importantly, it just takes around 15 mins to get the hydrogen refilled. Around 10,000 Indian Oil petrol pumps across the country are integrating hydrogen pumps at various locations. Also, Reliance is investing heavily in developing infrastructure pertaining to hydrogen. We might see the launch of this bus before the end of 2023.

The bus is 12 m in length and can accommodate 32-49 passengers depending on the seating configuration. Furthermore, these buses can be operated between -20 and +85 degrees Celsius temperatures essentially valid for the entire country apart from a select few Himalayan towns where temperatures dip below -20. Many states are already using electric buses in their fleets in a bid to phase out old diesel buses. Hydrogen buses will further corroborate that initiative to shift to greener mobility solutions. We shall keep an eye out for the latest development in this space.
