The new Renault Duster recently broke cover in Portugal as the Dacia Duster. I believe it is only natural to compare it to the old model which was available in India up until a few years ago. Renault proudly introduces the latest Duster as its most potent version to date. Having made its debut in India back in 2012, the Duster significantly contributed to Renault’s market triumph. Despite being on the market for a decade, it was eventually discontinued due to dwindling demand. However, the Duster is set to make a comeback in a modern avatar, with Renault designating India as a pivotal production hub for this new model. Let us delve into this comparison.

Design and Dimensions
The latest Duster exudes confidence with a muscular bonnet, squared wheel arches, and robust body cladding, presenting a bold and sculpted appearance. Functional roof rails add to its street appeal, capable of holding 80 kg. The front showcases Y-motif LED DRLs, a sleeker grille with chrome inserts, and a bumper resembling a bull bar. The side profile boasts flared rear fenders, generous ground clearance, and 18-inch dual-tone multi-spoke diamond-cut alloy wheels. Bronze accents adorn the ORVM, and a distinct change places the rear door handle on the C-pillar.

The rear features Y-motif LED lights, a spoiler, and a rugged bumper, while a sharply sloping rear windscreen and 472 litres of luggage space mark substantial transformations from the first-gen Duster in India. The new-gen Duster stands out with its significant aesthetic overhaul, promising a distinctive presence on our roads. The new model will measure 4,343 mm in length and will have a wheelbase of a decent 2,657 mm. This is almost at par with the last-gen model. Therefore, while the overall size will almost be similar, the design elements will be distinct.

Interior and Features
The outgoing model was a bit outdated at the time it was discontinued. Its age was apparent on the inside. It lacked most modern features which its rivals at the time were equipped with. In fact, that was a major reason for its downfall. Indians need fancy cabin and features. That is the reason for the massive success of Korean products like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in the mid-size SUV segment. The good news is that the new Duster does come with a variety of new-age gadgets and gizmos.

It is clear that the potential buyers won’t have too much to complain about in this regard.

Author’s Note
Well, we all know that the Duster was among the first mid-size SUVs to enter India back in 2012. In fact, it could be credited for the inception of this segment in our market. However, over time, the competition grew significantly, resulting in Duster lagging behind. Finally, the French carmaker had to pull the plug. Today, almost all major carmakers have a product in this segment. Therefore, Renault must ensure that it comes with all guns blazing to make any impact. The launch will occur in the festive season of 2025.
