In recent years, many aftermarket car shops have tried installing electric motors on regular ICE cars
A prominent YouTuber showcases an instance where he installs a Tesla Model 3 motor on a Toyota Hilux pickup truck. Now, that is something you don’t come across every day. Tesla is the largest EV maker on the planet. It is credited with being the torchbearer when it comes to popularizing EVs. It has been in the business for over a decade. On the other hand, Toyota has been the biggest carmaker in the world on multiple occasions. However, it is a bit slow to go all-electric. For now, let us take a look at the details of this case here.
Tesla Model 3 Motor Installed on Toyota Hilux Truck
We are able to get a glimpse of this entire saga courtesy of Electric Supercar on YouTube. The host explains the step-by-step process of performing this seemingly complex task. In the beginning, he found the ideal place to position the electric motor so that the truck could utilize its all-wheel-drive capabilities. Note that it is inherent to a tough off-roader like the iconic Hilux. That is what the vehicle is globally renowned for. He showcases how he created a frame to secure the electric motor in place.
It is critical to install the electric motor in such a manner that it doesn’t get affected when the truck traverses across challenging terrains. Also, it should not hinder the truck in terms of the breakover angle. Keeping all that in mind, he undertakes an extensive task of creating metallic components that would clamp the electric motor to the chassis of the car for maximum stability. In the end, the Tesla Model 3’s electric motor is mounted perfectly in the centre, powering the front and rear driving shafts.
My View
I must admit this is an immensely impressive feat to convert a traditional pickup truck into an electric-powered vehicle in a garage. This also shows the experience and expertise of the mechanic to be able to pull such a task off. Note that such incidents are great for learning and passion project purposes. However, to make them road legal, you need to abide by the protocols and get the necessary approvals from the respective authorities. I shall keep an eye out for more such cases in the future.
