Delhi Government has directed cab aggregators like Ola and Uber to add 50% electric cars in their fleet by next year
Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government has directed the cab aggregators such as Ola and Uber as well as delivery service providers to ensure 50 per cent of all two-wheelers and 25 per cent of all four-wheelers in the fleet should be EVs by March 2023. Through this move, the tailpipe emissions from two- and four-wheelers used by the cab aggregators and delivery partners will see a substantial reduction.

This announcement was made by Kailash Gahlot, Transport and Environment Minister, Government of Delhi on Twitter. This move will not only give a push to service providers to adopt electric vehicles but could also present as a model that other states could follow. Taking to the micro-blogging site, Gahlot said, “Another first for Delhi in EVs-aggregators and delivery service providers to ensure that 50% of all new 2 wheelers and 25% of all new 4 wheelers are electric by March 2023. Notification is to be issued once the process of evaluating objections is completed at end of 60 days period. Soon Transport Department shall hold consultations with all stakeholders to finalise the modalities.”

The draft notification will be made public on the Delhi Government’s official website. The Government will even ask for opinions from the residents for around 60 days. Finally, the same will be reviewed and will be implemented after making changes, if necessary.

As per the policy, cab aggregators and delivery service providers will have to include 10 per cent electric two-wheelers and 5 per cent electric cars within three months of implementation of the policy. By March 2023, 50 per cent of all new two-wheelers and 25 per cent of new four-wheelers will have to be electric. Earlier, Gahlot had asked CV owners to have at least half of their respective fleets converted to electric vehicles. In fact, CV owners were even urged to convert their entire fleet to electric by 2025.
