Maruti Suzuki implemented it in the Celerio, Mahindra may use it in the Quanto, Tata may tinker with it in either Zest, Bolt or Kite and for those who have not been able to make the link between the three, we are talking about the use of AMT (Automated Manual Transmission). The newest automobile manufacturer to toy with the idea of installing AMT in their vehicles is Nissan; the Japanese car maker is -according to reports- all set to replace the existing CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with a low cost AMT in the Micra and Sunny. According to Nissan this would prove to be a cheaper and viable option for both the company and the consumer in the longer run.
The Micra and Sunny come with a Xtronic CVT gearbox, developed and produced by gearbox maker JATCO, a subsidiary of Nissan. The X-Tronic is one of the best CVT gearboxes around, it is however pretty expensive. By offering an AMT option on its cars, Nissan will be able to lower prices of its automatic cars and attract more buyers. Since Nissan’s AMT will be derived from its existing CVT model, we can look forward to having the fuel economy associated with a CVT and the comfort of having an AMT which shall be a blessing in the kind of traffic that we have on our roads, with a very marginal difference in price.
With reports of the Micra and Sunny waiting to be the first to get “Nissan’s AMT” treatment. The Datsun Go and Datsun Go+ may also be accorded with the same down the line. Maruti has had considerable success with AMT in its Celerio, lets see if Nissan can replicate the same results for themselves.
