Unlike what was recently rumoured, NGT has not lifted the ban on 15 Year old petrol and 10 Year old diesel cars in Delhi-NCR
Big news earlier came out for lakhs of people of Delhi-NCR that the 10-year old diesel and 15-year old petrol vehicles will not be banned anymore. It was said that the owners of such vehicles can get the registration renewed by paying a fee of Rs 5,000 only. It was, however, later confirmed by the authorities that it was false news and all the media houses have now been informed.

The Ban Is Still Effective – President, FADA
Basically, no such order on the lifting on the ban was ever issued by the National Green Tribunal. This has been confirmed by Vinkesh Gulati, President, Federation of Automobile Dealers Association. Taking to Twitter, he clarified that the ban is still in effect and there will be no renewal of the said vehicles.

The NGT had last year ordered the phasing out of old vehicles in the NCR. Such vehicles have to be either scrapped or owners can obtain a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) for re-registration and usage in non-NCR locations. The Transport Commissioner said, “In fact, the enforcement teams of the Transport Department are conducting a drive against over-aged vehicles in the city and such vehicles are being seized. Last year, from January 2022 to October 2022, the registration of more than 50 lakh vehicles in the National Capital Region was cancelled in a phased manner. Of these, about 3 million vehicles were petrol models older than 15-years while the rest were diesel vehicles.

Inquiring the Source of Rumour
Transport statistics show that as of October 1, there were 8,26,110 registered vehicles in Gautam Budh Nagar alone out of which 94,299 are diesel and 7,31,811 are petrol vehicles were included. Of these, 1,34, 073 vehicles, about 15%, were deemed to be unfit for use as per the rules of the National Green Tribunal. .The Transport Department official said that they are inquiring the source of the rumour that was spread on social media.
