Mahindra has recently confirmed that the next-gen Thar will be launched in India in the first quarter of the next financial year. It should be out on our roads by June 2020.
The Mahindra Thar has to be one of the most hotly anticipated cars for a long time. Mahindra has now confirmed that the next-gen Thar will be launched in India in the first quarter of the next financial year. While we were all looking forward to see the new Thar is flesh at the 2020 AutonExpo, the carmaker decided against it and will instead unveil the SUV in a separate event in the coming months.
The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be powered by a BS6-compliant version of Mahindra’s tried-and-tested 2.2-litre diesel engine. The engine puts out much more power now at around 140bhp and it will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra is even expected to offer an automatic gearbox option with the new Thar.
This time around, Mahindra isa also expected to offer a new petrol engine on the Thar for the first time. This new engine will be a 2.0L turbocharged unit that belongs to Mahindra’s mStallion family of engines. The engine delivers a healthy 190hp and 380Nm of torque, and feature direct injection as well as turbo charging.
The Thar has also grown by leaps and bounds in terms of design and aesthetics. It’s no more a bare-bones rugged off-roader but comes with significantly sophisticated design elements. Its also larger than its predecessor and looks more capable than ever before. The interiors also get a completely new dashboard design. Its much more premium and will come much better equipped than its predecessor.

In terms of features, the new Thar will come equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a multi-info display in the instrument cluster, manual AC, and multiple USB ports. Exterior features are likely to include a rear parking camera, LED daytime running lights and power-folding wing mirrors. The new Thar will also get two airbags and ABS as standard, along with a front-facing second row of seats.

The Thar has been spotted testing multiple times over the past year. We can’t wait for Mahindra to finally unveil this SUV. With this update, the prices will ofcourse go up but it should still be pretty worth it. When launched, the new Mahindra Thar will continue to rival the Force Gurkha which was also updated at the 2020 Auto Expo. Apart from that, the Thar will have a brand new competitor in the Maruti Suzuki Jimny as well.
