The next-gen Mahindra Thar is one of the most anticiaped new launches of 2020 and we have seen numerous spy shots of the SUV as it went through testing over the last many months. The launch of the new Mahindra Thar is just around the corner, expected by October during the festive season. While we have brought you numerous spy shots of the exterior, here we have a video that gives you the best look of the interiors of the next-gen Mahindra Thar. Much like the SUV itself, there’s much anticipation about the interiors of the new Thar because its a huge departure from what we have known it to be.
The interiors of the next-gen Mahindra Thar has been completely redesigned and it gets a fresh new dashboard. The new Thar will be a lot more comfort-orientated and much less utilitarian than the model it’ll replace. There’s a touchscreen infotainment system in the Thar for the first time ever and it takes center stage on the dashboard. The infotainment is expected to come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and will also double as a display for the reverse camera. Below the high-set infotainment system and circular AC vents which get subtle chrome outlines. The steering wheel is from the TUV300 and it gets steering-mounted audio and telephony controls as well.
The SUV will get a manual HVAC system with a new stack of controls. There also seems to be a band of toggle switches below the climate control, the functionality of which is yet to be known. Interestingly, the controls for the power windows have been placed on the central console. Also, in terms of features, the new Thar will have dual front airbags, power-folding wing mirrors and a large multi-info display in the instrument cluster. As we had reported earlier, the new SUV will get front-facing seats for the second row.
The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be powered by an updated version of Mahindra’s 2.2L mHawk diesel engine which is expected to produce around 140hp. This engine will come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard with four-wheel drive system but the addition of an automatic gearbox option will be a first for the Thar. This new automatic gearbox will be a 6-speed Aisin torque converter unit.

But the automatic gearbox is not the only first for the next-gen Thar. Mahindra will also be plonking a petrol engine under the hood of the Thar this time around. In fact, the new Thar will be the launch vehicle for Mahindra’s new 2.0L turbo-petrol engine. This brand new engine belongs to Mahindra’s new mStallion petrol engine family and it will feature turbo-charging as well as direct-injection. Transmission options with the petrol engine will also likely be the 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

This is only the second-generation of the Thar but this time the intent of the vehicle is very different. Pitched solely as an off-roader, the first-gen Mahindra Thar almost had a cult following in the country. However, this second-gen SUV will be pitched as a lifestyle product and while it will be still as capable off the road as the original Thar, it will also be comfort oriented and not as bare-bones as its predecessor. To further aid versatility of the new Thar, Mahindra will also be offering the option of either a hard-top roof or a soft-top rood. There are talks of there being removable roof panels as well, much like the Jeep Wrangler.
