The Mahindra Thar has always been a very popular SUV in the Indian market, not because it is a great vehicle but because of its character of a butch go-anywhere SUV. The Thar is quite flawed in a lot of areas but it screams adventure and is the cheapest truly rugged SUV you can buy in India. Fortunately, Mahindra has been developing the next-gen Thar for quite some time now and has been spotted several times too. Here’s everything that you need to know about the next-gen Mahindra Thar:
Exterior
The next-gen Mahindra Thar retains its signature upright stance with a typical rugged SUV styling. The new Thar will be quite larger than the present one. It will come in several body sizes with different wheelbases as well. It will also feature both hard and soft top roofs. The new Thar was also seen with larger wheel arches suggesting more suspension travel or for accommodating larger after market wheels. Overall, it will retain its original styling but will touched up with modern details.
Interiors
This is where the next-gen Mahindra Thar will see the biggest update. The current That was quite bare bones on the interior. With the new Thar, the interiors have been completely changed and this time it will feature touchscreen infotainment system with GPS navigation and smartphone integration on its dashboard. It will also have a digital display on the instrument panel, four speakers and contrast stitched seats. It also features front power windows and we can also expect a new multi-function steering wheel.

Powertrain
While the cuurent-gen Thar uses a 2.5L, Diesel engine with 105hp, the next-gen Thar is expected to be quite more powerful than the current one. It will use a new 2.0-litre BS6 compliant engine that will be launched with the all-new Thar. The engine will produce around 130 bhp and will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be a sitting on a new ladder-frame chassis which will improve its off-road capability and also its on-road manners with a lot more refinement. The Borwarner 4WD system, low range gearbox and the differential locking will be carried over in the new Thar as well.

Prices and Launch
The prices of the new Mahindra Thar will increase by a considerable amount. However, the manufacturer has confirmed that it would not price the new model much higher than the current one. The next-gen Thar will be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo and will go in sale later next year. It is expected to be priced around Rs. 10-14 lakh.
