The next-gen Hyundai i20 will have three engine options – the 1.2L Kappa Petrol engine, a new 1.0L Turbo-petrol engine and a new 1.5L CRDi Diesel engine.
We have already reported to you with the exterior design and interiors of the next-gen Hyundai i20. The hatchback was revealed internationally some time ago and its going to come to India by mid-2020. The India-spec Hyundai i20 will look largely similar to the international-spec model. We now have detailed information on the engine options for the next-gen i20 ahead of its launch in India.
Like all other newer Hyundai’s, the i20 is also going to be powered by a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine under the hood. The engine could be producing 120bhp and 172Nm of peak torque. That would certainly make the i20 the most powerful hatchback in its segment. The engine will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox and Hyundai is even expected to offer a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox option as well.
The current-gen i20 is powered by a 1.2L naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine that produces 83bhp and 113Nm of peak torque. It comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. This 1.2L Kappa engine was recently updated to meet the BS6 emission norms and this too will make its way on the newer car. However, this engine will perhaps be the base engine on the new i20, now that it also has the option of a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine.
As for the diesel engine, Hyundai has discontinued the 1.4L CRDi diesel engine from the current i20. Instead, the next-gen i20 will be powered by a new 1.5L CRDi diesel engine. In fact, its the same engine that does duty on the Kia Seltos and will also serve the next-gen Hyundai Creta. It will obviously be detuned for the hatchback. We expect it to be producing around 100bhp in the i20. The diesel engine will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox as before.

Hyundai recently also revealed the interiors of the new i20. The design is completely new and looks very contemporary. In terms of features, we expect the 2020 i20 could come with BlueLink connected car technology, a sunroof, a touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a digital instrument cluster, cruise control, climate control, a premium sound system and a wireless charging pad. Expected safety features include 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and a rear view camera.
