A recent look I had at the Tata Motors’ sales performance in October 2023 reveals an interesting trend. From the rather wide range of vehicles from the homegrown carmaker, three models have found many takers. Out of these, the Nexon becomes the most popular Tata vehicle with over 16,800 units sold last month. The Tata Punch, which sits a segment lower to the Nexon, sold over 15,000 copies. At the third slot is the Altroz, which has found almost 11,000 buyers. Interestingly, it outsells the more affordable Tiago to find a place in the top three.
Model | Sales |
Nexon | 16,887 |
Punch | 15,317 |
Altroz | 5,984 |

Tata Nexon
A quick look at the sales data from FADA was quick to reveal to me the strong performance by the new Tata Nexon. With 16,887 units sold last month, it even becomes the most popular car in its class. It maybe noted here that the sub-4-metre SUV has received a rather comprehensive facelift. The car looks fresher than ever and even gets a handful of new features. Besides, its traditional strengths of good ride and respectable crash worthiness makes it a popular choice. Yet another factor working in the SUV’s favour is the diverse range of powertrains. The Maruti Brezza-rival is available in petrol, diesel, and electric options. The Nexon records a strong YoY growth of 23%, up from 13,767 units in October 2022.

Tata Punch
At the second spot on Tata’s report card is the Punch. Overall, it becomes the sixth highest-selling car in the last month. The micro-SUV sold 15,317 copies. This corresponds to a remarkable year-on-year growth of 39%, up from 10,982 units sold in the same month last year. Unlike the Nexon, the Punch is not available in diesel and electric formats. However, it’s available with a CNG option. Even the Punch received a small update soon after the introduction of the Hyundai Exter. Among the highlights of these updates are the electric sunroof and the CNG option. Also, akin to the Nexon, the Punch enjoys a full 5-star safety rating in earlier generation of Global NCAP tests.
Tata Altroz
Interestingly, the affordable Tiago misses out on even the third spot. Instead, it’s the Altroz that becomes the third most popular Tata car in October 2023. Like the Nexon, the Altroz is available in petrol, diesel and CNG formats. In fact, there’s even an all-electric version in the pipeline. Meanwhile, it shares the ALFA-ARC platform with the Punch. The Altroz clocks a 25% YoY growth compared to 4,770 units sold in October last year.

Author’s Note
Certainly, the new Tata Nexon seems to have made a great impression on the car-buying lot. Even though not a generation update, the latest version brings in enough improvements to help the sub-4-metre SUV establish a stronger foothold in the market. What’s interesting, though, is its popularity surpassing that of the more affordable Punch. While this could be an indicator of its high popularity, the higher number could even be due to the higher dealer dispatches on the introduction of a new model. Also, new models tend to have a higher demand closer to their introduction, which means that some of the demand could frizzle out. I’m sure we’ll have a clearer picture as time passes. That said, what’s clear is the higher popularity arising from the advent of the facelift.
