With the almost stellar success of the R15 and the FZ series, Yamaha Motor India has set sights on the automatic scooter segment of Indian Two Wheelers market. While Yamaha already has the Ray 113cc automatic scooter on sale here, it seems to be readying a 125 cc scooter to add to its line-up of products. This news though is not much of a surprise with the current two-wheeler market showing a stronger demand for scooters rather than motorcycles. The expected launch should happen on 7th next month and the Yamaha’s new scooter will be positioned against the Honda Activa, Suzuki Swish and Vespa LX 125. The upcoming model was recently spotted testing in India and you can see the spy pics below.
While the finer details of this project are still under wraps, the new scooter, in all probability, would be the Nozza Grande model that is already on sale in Vietnam. The scooter is specially designed to appeal to women buyers. Powering this scooter in Vietnam is a 125 cc, air cooled, fuel injected engine that promises to be highly fuel efficient and peppy. In Vietnam, this model is produced and sold through Yamaha Motor Vietnam Co, the Vietnamese subsidiary of Yamaha Motor Group.
The upcoming Yamaha 125cc scooter will be produced from the new Yamaha Chennai facility which started late last year with the Alpha scooter. The new 125cc scooter will enter production sometime in June 2015, while the plant will have the capacity to make around 120,000 units per annum.
Competition in any segment is always good for the buyers and the 125cc scooter segment already has a handful of options that will soon lock horns with the Yamaha Nozza Grande. The list of rivals for the upcoming scooter:
