While petrol-electric hybrids are slowly becoming more popular, Diesel-electric is an unknown concept. The SHVS-equipped mild-hybrid Marutis notwithstanding, we’re yet to have this option. All this will likely change with the new-gen Toyota Fortuner set to debut in 2024. Known for reliability and ruggedness, the Toyota Fortuner is easily the most aspirational SUV for most Indians. While its current version continues to be a top-seller, a generation change will be a welcome. And the diesel-electric hybrid with extra punch and high fuel efficiency will help the T-Fort solidify its numero-uno status.

48V Hybrid for New Toyota Fortuner
Notably, the 48V hybrid technology is already available on the Hilux and the Land Cruiser overseas. This makes the Fortuner a very strong candidate for receiving this technology. The specific details remain uncertain but it is safe to assume that we will see this option on the full model replacement. A few months ago, Toyota unveiled its innovative 48V hybrid system. The same is shown in great detail in the video below. This system works in tandem with a Diesel engine. It offers 4 significant advantages:
- Seamless stop-and-go function
- Higher fuel efficiency
- Higher low-end torque
- Better water-wading performance
Basically, the video emphasises the benefits in city driving by showing how the belt-driven generator boosts torque and ensures a smooth engine start without vibrations. Moreover, the system plays a role in enhancing fuel efficiency. The regenerative braking mechanism is instrumental in recharging the 48V battery through both engine and braking. The video even highlights strategic placement of the 48V motor to enhance the water-wading capability.

What We Think
Currently, the recently introduced 48V hybrid system is solely available in select variants of Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser Prado sold abroad. However, there is a strong likelihood that Toyota intends to extend the availability of this system to the Toyota Fortuner. Such a strategic move holds the potential to significantly elevate the widespread popularity of the Toyota Fortuner. The incorporation of this state-of-the-art hybrid system will enhance performance as well as fuel efficiency. More importantly, it’s a step in the right direction to reduce tailpipe emissions.
