The new Mercedes-Benz GLA will draw heavily from the present generation A-class in terms of design, interior layout, features and even powertrain options.
Mercedes-Benz will be debuting the all-new GLA compact crossover at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Like its A-class sibling, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA will be adopting the same set of updates like we saw with the new A-class that debuted earlier this year.
The GLA is based on the A-class and it will be sharing the styling in large parts. Of course, it will retain the flared rear haunches, unique profile and other bits that make it a crossover. The new Mercedes-Benz GLA will be based upon Mercedes’ MFA platform which also underpins several other cars including the A-class hatchback, A-class sedan, CLA four-door coupé, CLA Shooting Brake estate, the recently unveiled GLB SUV and B-class MPV.
No technical details of the GLA has been released yet but we expect it share most things with the A-Class hatchback including the powertrain, interior layout and features as well. This means that the GLA will get Mercedes’ latest touchpad and voice-controlled MBUX infotainment system along with more advanced safety features and better material quality.

As for the powertrains, the new Mercedes-Benz GLA will get a 1.3L, turbocharged petrol engine which has been developed in conjunction with the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The engine will likely come in two states of tune. There will also be a 2.0L, petrol engine sitting on top of the range for the time being. A 1.5L, diesel motor will also be offered.
Later on, there will also be an AMG version of the GLA, called the AMG GLA 45 which will also have four-wheel drive system. But prior to that, there will also be a GLA 35 variant just like we saw with the new A35. The GLA will be produced alongside the A-class units at Mercedes’ factory in Rastatt, Germany.

There is however no news of Mercedes bringing the next-gen GLA to India as of yet. Instead, Mercedes is more likely to bring the new GLB SUV that was unveiled some time ago. It has seven seats and is a more practical and stronger alternative to the BMW X1, the Audi Q3 and the Volvo XC40.
