The new Maruti Swift has been launched in the Indian market in its fourth generation avatar. The iconic hatchback bears tons of modern equipment including a new engine, enhanced safety functions, a new design and some added features. However, the biggest talking point has to be the unbelievable mileage of 25.75 kmpl. The pricing is also attractive to reel in new customers. On the other hand, the Hyundai i20 is among the most successful premium hatchback cars in the country. It has been around for close to a decade. In its latest iteration, it offers exquisite styling, excessive features, multiple powertrain options and more. For this post, we are considering the variants of these two cars which are priced in the vicinity of Rs 10 lakh.
New Maruti Swift vs Hyundai i20 – Price
After scouting the variants list of both these cars, I was able to select the comparable variants of the two cars which have an on-road price of under Rs 10.50 lakh each. For the new Maruti Swift, this is the Zxi+ DT model, while for the Hyundai i20, it is the Asta trim. The difference in on-road price is Rs 24,000, with the i20 being the more expensive.

New Maruti Swift vs Hyundai i20 – Specs and Mileage
The new Maruti Swift comes with a new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Z12E engine with mild hybrid tech which produces a decent 82 PS and 112 Nm of peak power and torque. The transmission duties are carried out by either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. The mileage figures are 25.75 kmpl in the automatic and 24.8 kmpl in the manual version. This makes it one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in the country. To get the AMT gearbox, one needs to pay a premium of Rs 50,000.
On the other hand, the Hyundai i20 has a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine which produces 83 PS and 114.7 Nm of peak power and torque. There are options of choosing between either a 5-speed manual or an iVT (CVT) automatic gearbox. In the automatic version, the power jumps to 88 PS. It has an ARAI-rated mileage of just 16 kmpl (MT) and 20 kmpl (AT) which is a huge disadvantage in comparison to the Swift. Since CVT is a more sophisticated automatic transmission, it commands a premium of around Rs 1 lakh over the corresponding manual variant.

Our View
The comparison between these two vehicles is quite interesting. I believe many people would be confused between these two because of the proximity in their prices. But there are definitive use cases for both of these cars. If you are on a strict budget and want a vehicle with low running costs and high mileage, Swift has to be the one for you. On the other hand, if you are looking for premium features and convenience amenities and are willing to spend some extra bucks, the Hyundai i20 suits you better.
