BNCAP (Bharat New Car Assessment Program) is India’s indigenous crash testing agency which rewards safety ratings to vehicles.
The new Maruti Swift could be the company’s first car to score a full 5-star safety rating at the Bharat NCAP. Note that BNCAP came into existence in August 2023 and the first crash test reports were out in December 2023. These were the Tata flagship siblings – Harrier and Safari, with a full 5-star rating. Traditionally, cars from Maruti Suzuki have not performed too well on these safety tests. As people become more conscious about safety, the largest carmaker is making adjustments to its products to boast a high rating. That is the reason why we might see a great score for the upcoming new Swift.
New Maruti Swift at Bharat NCAP
We know that Maruti Suzuki had submitted three models to the Bharat NCAP for testing – Grand Vitara, Brezza and Baleno. These belong to three different categories in our market. In fact, all of these are among the top sellers in their respective segments. The results are expected to arrive on May 8, 2024. However, what intrigues me the most is the performance of the upcoming new Swift. It has been one of the highest-selling vehicles in India ever. With its fourth-generation model arriving in the next few days, it will be interesting to see how well it performs on these thorough tests.
In the recent reports online, it was confirmed that the new Swift will come with 6 airbags as standard. That is bound to increase its overall safety rating. Note that the new Swift already scored a respectable 4 stars at the JNCAP (Japanese NCAP) recently. With 6 standard airbags, it might be able to improve that score further. If that is the case, I feel that the new Swift will attain a new level of popularity in our market. In essence, the already mighty popular hatchback is set to become even more attractive.
Our View
In this day and age where potential car buyers are so concerned about the safety ratings of their cars, it becomes imperative for carmakers to address this aspect. Before making a decision to purchase a car, people want to know if it has a high safety rating. While that was a pain point for Maruti Suzuki in the past, its new and modern vehicles could change things around for the largest carmaker in the country. Firstly, we need to wait for the results of the Grand Vitara, Brezza and Baleno. Thereafter, it shall be exciting to see if Maruti sends the new Swift to Bharat NCAP. In any case, we shall keep you posted.
