Engine Options & Specification
The new Maruti Suzuki Baleno measures 3,995mm in length, 1,745mm in width and is 1,470mm high. In comparison, the Swift measures 3,850mm and is 1,695mm wide. The new Baleno has a boot space of 339 litres. The Baleno is underpinned by an all-new platform that will be also seen underpinning the Maruti YBA/Vitara Brezza compact SUV and the next-generation Swift. For India, the new Baleno is offered with an 84 PS 1.2-litre K-Series, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol and a 75 PS 1.3-litre Multijet, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine. Both these motors come mated to five-speed manual transmissions. Additionally, the petrol engine also offers an optional CVT gearbox. The Diesel motor does not benefit from the recently launched SHVS mini-hybrid tech. As per ARAI, mileage figures have been rated at 21.7 kpl for the petrol variant and 27.39 kpl for the diesel model, which also happens to be the best in class. If rumours are to be believed, Maruti could later bring in Suzuki’s all-new 1.0-litre, turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine. This 1.0-litre turbo-petrol motor boasts of direct injection and is related to the larger 1.4-litre unit which is most likely to power the China-spec model.

The new Baleno features world-class engines, modern styling and offers a sufficiently premium cabin. With the promise of sufficient frugality, space and a long list of features, the new Baleno could become one of the most practical choices in the hatchback market. However, it will go up against some very stiff competition from the likes of the Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz and VW Polo. And then there is the possibility of cannibalism within the ranks of Maruti with the Swift on one end and the S-Cross on the other.
