Maruti Dzire and Tata Tigor are direct rivals and offered in petrol and CNG guises
In this post, I am comparing the new Maruti Dzire CNG and Tata Tigor CNG in terms of specs, prices, features, design, safety and more. The aim is to let you know the best option for you. Dzire is the highest-selling sedan in India ever. It has been on sale since 2008. Even after 16 years of existence, it is currently at an all-time high demand. We have it in its 4th-generation version at the moment. This time around, Maruti Suzuki offered useful safety amenities to the latest Dzire which resulted in it being the first Maruti Suzuki car to get a full 5-star safety rating at the Global NCAP. On the other hand, Tata Tigor is also a popular product in this category. It boasts a decent 4-star safety rating at the Global NCAP (old protocols). Let us compare the two thoroughly.
Maruti Dzire CNG vs Tata Tigor CNG – Price
Let us commence with arguably the most important criterion for buying a new car for most customers in India, the price. The Maruti Dzire CNG is available in two variants – VXi and ZXi with prices ranging from Rs 8.74 lakh to Rs 9.84 lakh, ex-showroom. On the other hand, the Tata Tigor CNG is offered in 5 variants including an AMT gearbox. These start at Rs 7.60 lakh and go all the way up to Rs 9.40 lakh, ex-showroom. Hence, the Tigor has the price advantage, as well as the convenience of an automated transmission.
Price (ex-sh.) | Maruti Dzire CNG | Tata Tigor CNG |
Base Model | Rs 8.74 lakh | Rs 7.60 lakh |
Top Model | Rs 9.84 lakh | Rs 9.40 lakh |
Maruti Dzire CNG vs Tata Tigor CNG – Specs and Mileage
Then we compare these two compact sedans in terms of the powertrains and transmissions. The new Maruti Dzire borrows an engine and gearbox from the latest Swift. Hence, it gets a new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Z12E petrol + CNG engine which belts out a decent 70 PS and 102 Nm of peak power and torque. There is a sole 5-speed manual transmission with this powertrain. Interestingly for the buyers, the Dzire offers a mileage of a massive 33.73 km/kg. That is the highest in the segment. This is the single biggest reason for the incredible demand for Maruti Suzuki products in India.
On the other hand, the Tata Tigor CNG comes with a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol + CNG engine which is good for 73 PS and 95 Nm of maximum power and torque, respectively. It is slightly more powerful than the Dzire but has lower torque. However, what sets the Tigor CNG apart from the Dzire is the option of choosing between either a 5-speed manual or an AMT gearbox. This makes it one of the few CNG cars to come with automatic gearbox options in the country. It has a healthy edge over its rivals. Even the mileage figures are competitive at 28.06 km/kg. Hence, the fight is neck to neck with the addition of an AMT gearbox with the Tigor CNG.
Specs | Maruti Dzire CNG | Tata Tigor CNG |
Engine | 1.2L 3-cyl Petrol | 1.2L 3-cyl Petrol |
Power | 70 PS | 73 PS |
Torque | 102 Nm | 95 Nm |

Maruti Dzire CNG vs Tata Tigor CNG – Design and Dimensions
Let us now move on to discuss how these two compact sedans look. The new Dzire bears a total departure from the last-gen model. It now comes with a fresh front fascia containing a sleek rectangular LED headlamp cluster with integrated LED DRLs, a piano black panel between them, a massive black grille, and a sporty bumper with fog lamps on the extreme edges. That lends it a unique appearance. Apart from that, the side section contains dual-tone 15-inch stylish alloy wheels and a chrome belt underneath the window frames. At the rear, there are many new amenities including a shark fin antenna and arrow-shaped LED taillamps which are connected via a thick chrome slab and a rugged bumper. All in all, this has to be the most striking Maruti Dzire ever.
On the other hand, the Tata Tigor CNG carries the familiar look which we have been witnessing for a few years now. At the front, there is a sleek front grille with tri-arrow insignia and a black strip running at the end of the bonnet. We see the same pattern on the Tiago hatchback from which the Tigor has been created. The headlamps are neatly merged into the sides of the grille and the large fog lamp housing is located on the sporty bumper down below. Moving down the sides highlights stylish alloy wheels, a thick chrome belt under the window frames and a slightly sloping roofline. Completing the external appearance is the rear profile with a shark fin antenna, a boot lid-mounted spoiler, a sleek panel connecting the taillamps and a rugged bumper. Even though appearances are subjective, I would pick the Dzire due to its fresh design.
Dimensions (in mm) | Maruti Dzire CNG | Tata Tigor CNG |
Length | 3,995 | 3,993 |
Width | 1,735 | 1,677 |
Height | 1,525 | 1,535 |
Wheelbase | 2,450 | 2,450 |
My View
Choosing between these two compelling compact sedans can be quite tricky. However, I feel it really depends on your personal preference. If you want the latest vehicle with a modern cabin and tech amenities, going for the new Maruti Dzire CNG makes a lot of sense. It is also the safest sedan in the category. On the other hand, if you want a relatively more affordable vehicle and want an automatic transmission, the Tata Tigor CNG will fit the bill. In any case, you can’t go wrong with either of these options.
