Mahindra is readying a barrage of around 5 electric SUVs within the next two years in the Indian market
The upcoming Mahindra XEV 9e electric SUV was spotted testing in real life. Mahindra currently just offers the XUV400 in the electric SUV segment in India. As other carmakers take the lead in this category including Tata Motors and JSW MG Motor India, even Mahindra has concrete plans to be a prominent player in this space. A couple of years ago, it showcased 5 new all-electric SUVs for the future. We are slowly getting closer to the launch of the first one out of those. Note that Mahindra teased the XEV 9e and BE 6e recently.
Mahindra XEV 9e Electric SUV Spotted Testing
This post stems from ShriZen on YouTube. The visuals capture a heavily camouflaged electric SUV plying on the road. Someone driving close to it recorded the entire saga. The electric SUV is visible in the rearview mirror of his own car. Even though the body is completely covered, the silhouette gives away it identity. This becomes particularly true once we get a glimpse of the rear end which is evidently inspired by the existing XUV700. Even at the front, the prominent LED DRLs are visible. On the sides, the wheels are neatly concealed by the flush-fitting door handles and the faux roof rails are visible. The third quarter section borrows the chrome belt design from the current XUV700 too.
The world premiere of the XEV 9e and BE 6e is slated for November 26, 2024, at the Unlimit India event in Chennai. That is when we might get the details about the powertrain options. Mahindra will be bifurcating its lineup into two new electric brands – XEV and BE. These will utilize Mahindra’s new Electric Origin INGLO platform. While the XEV will draw inspiration from the XUV700, the BE will be a coupe SUV, representing the modern design philosophy of the Indian automobile giant. We are awaiting more details with each passing day as Mahindra has a tradition of dropping the teasers frequently.
My View
The electric vehicle space in India is heating up. The demand is clearly expanding and the number of models on sale is also on the rise. Recently, the industry experienced a disruptive pricing strategy due to BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service). In this, buyers only need to pay the cost of the vehicle upfront and rent the battery. This was introduced by MG with its Windsor EV, which now extends to Comet EV and ZS EV. Even Tata Motors is also planning something similar. Looking at the response to this pricing strategy, we might even see it in the new breed of Mahindra EVs right from the beginning. Let us keep an eye out for more details in this regard.
