The grille on the new Mahindra Thar has received quite a mixed reaction and inevitably, it will be the most modified part of the new SUV. So here’s a rendering of the Thar re-imagined with a Jeep-like grille to satisfy you all. And it looks stunning.
Mahindra unveiled the new-gen Thar last month and it is scheduled for its launch on October 2, 2020. The new-gen Thar is a quantum leap over its predecessor, both in terms of functionality and design. The design of the new Mahindra Thar has received a bit of mixed reaction though, primarily because of that front grille. While everyone loves the look of the new Thar, the grille seems very out of place and almost like an after thought. We know that this is because Mahindra wanted to avoid any controversies with usage of the Jeep seven-slat grille.
It was really hoped that the new Thar would finally be the SUV that people would buy without any modifications but people looking to buy the new Thar are already looking for aftermarket options for the grille. And rightfully, several aftermarket accessories are already being prepared for the new Thar, including a Jeep-like grille. Earlier, we had even reported an authorized Mahindra dealership already offering aftermarket grille options for the new Thar. We bet a lot of you would want to see how the new Thar looks like with a better grille, or more precisely, a Jeep-like grille.
And so here you have it. Digital artist, Ayush Dubey, has created a digital rendering of the new Thar, re-imagining some of the design elements. The front face of the Mahindra Thar has completely been changed in this rendering. The grille is exactly what you get on the Jeep Wrangler, even with the indents for the headlights. The headlights also get LED rings around them and that is also something Mahindra could have very easily done for the stock Thar. After the grille, if there is any part on the new Thar that will be most modified, then that’s the front bumper.

Likewise, the front bumper here too has been re-imagined in a much more rugged-spec, complete with an electric winch and fog lamps. It is also a little more minimalistic than what’s on the stock Thar. Elsewhere, the running boards on the sides have been replaced by a minimalist looking rock slider. The ground clearance of this Thar also seems to be raised, perhaps due to the larger wheels or a custom lift kit. The wheels are of the same design as the stock car, but larger, and are wearing rugged all-terrain tires. The ‘Mahindra’ lettering on the hood is a nod to the ‘Rubicon’ lettering on the Jeep Wrangler.

With this rendering, the new Thar looks all the more like the Jeep Wrangler. There’s obviously no hiding the fact that the Thar is clearly inspired by the Wrangler but Mahindra did their best to differentiate the Thar from its distant American cousin. In the US, FCA had filed a lawsuit against Mahindra for the grille design on the Roxor for design infringement and won. Mahindra obviously did not want any more legal ramifications and so, the Thar is what it is. Still, the design is not perfect and there will be plenty of aftermarket modification for the new Thar, some even from Mahindra themselves. Perhaps, that’s the real essence of the Thar, that you build it to your own taste.
