Indian automobile manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra has always been a big player in the Indian automobile scene especially in the UV segment. The company has built a unique image among a loyal group of customers and is dominating various segments of the market with products like the Scorpio, XUV500 and Bolero. To add to this strong lineup, the company may launch a whole new world class product in the MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle) segment to accompany its existing Xylo model. This new Mahindra MPV is being developed at Mahindra’s R&D facility in the USA and will be launched worldwide starting with in India by 2017.
The Indian business giant has been a known face in the western world especially in the States. The group has tried its best to paint its name on the global canvas in various fields ranging from the I.T to agriculture. In this series of efforts the company had set up the Mahindra North America Technical Center in Troy, Michigan in September 2012. With over 35 engineers in this center the company is planning a world class new Mahindra MPV which will be launched first in India in 2017 and then will be shipped to the other global markets worldwide. Though we hope to see the shaped prototype in the 2016 Indian Auto Expo there has been no word regarding the product’s specification from the company.
For the time being the segment is dominated by Toyota Innova with Maruti Suzuki Ertiga available as a low priced option. Honda’s Mobilio will be launched in July 2014 followed by the Datsun Go+. Thus by 2017 Mahindra’s MPV will have serious competition in the segment. Currently the segment enjoys a sale of 12000 units per month which will further increase in presence of new options. The existing Mahindra Xylo has a price tag of Rs. 7.5-10 lakhs which rivals the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga which has more or less the similar price.
The company has no new launches planned for 2014 but in the first quarter of 2015 the Scorpio will receive a facelift and the automatic XUV500 will be introduced. After this the Mahindra’s Compact SUV which has the codename S101 might be launched in 2015-16. For the while the company’s European R&D is on hold and the U.S technical center of the company is enjoying the focus. The MPV segment may now witness a tough fight which has been an easy race till now for the other players in absence of the worth opponents.
