Nissan has been working on a compact SUV for India that’s scheduled to launch in September this year and here’s your best look at the upcoming SUV yet. Does it not look a lot like a Datsun?
It has already been reported that Nissan will soon be launching a new compact SUV in the Indian market but so far, the only glimpse we have had at this SUV was through a couple of teasers. Earlier this year, Nissan teased us with an image of the silhouette of upcoming compact SUV with the letter ‘M’ in the backdrop. This eventually led to reports claiming that it could indeed be called the Nissan Magnite. Nissan’s sub-brand, Datsun, had filed for a trademark for the same name and more recently, in March 2020, Nissan too trademarked the same name.
Name aside, the teasers gave us little scope for imagination and it was actually difficult to perceive the design of the upcoming compact SUV. Recently however, Nissan dropped a video on their Youtube Channel teasing several new products from their global lineup. That included a new successor to the Nissan 370Z sportscar but it also featured the India-bound Magnite. And for the first time, we have a clearer image of the what the compact SUV could look like.
If you remember some earlier reports, Datsun was supposed to launch a compact SUV in India but it was inevitably transferred to Nissan when the company was struggling to make its business case in India. A blurry look into the styling of this SUV actually suggests a more Datsun-like design language. The distinct L-shaped LED fog lamps and the trapezoidal grille look very similar to what we recently saw of the Datsun Redi-go facelift. Nissan has also equipped the SUV with LED headlamps for a more premium look.

A faux silver skid plate is also faintly recognizable from the teaser. In profile, the upcoming Nissan Magnite looks a lot similar to the Nissan Kicks with its crossover-like stance. At the rear, the upcoming SUV will feature a split LED tail lamp setup. Although there has been no images of the interiors of the Nissan Magnite yet, we expect it to come pretty loaded with equipment. Some of the expected features include a large screen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, connected car technology, climate control, a 360-degree camera, and keyless entry with push button start.

Under the hood, the Nissan Magnite will be powered by familiar engines from the Renault Triber. That includes the 1.0L, naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine from the Triber that produces 69bhp. It will also get the 1.0L turbo-petrol engine with around 100bhp that’s expected to debut on the Triber very soon. Both engines will come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Meanwhile, we expect an automatic gearbox in the form of a CVT to be exclusively offered only on the turbo-petrol variants. The Nissan Magnite is expected to hit the showrooms by September this year and reports suggest that it will be very aggressively priced, perhaps the cheapest in the segment. Nissan too is banking heavily on this car to change their fortunes in the country. The Nissan Magnite will rival the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Hyundai Venue, and Mahindra XUV300.
