Think again if you thought the Hyundai Santro was dead! Hyundai Motor India Ltd., which entered the Indian car market with the Santro in 1997, could be well on its way to bring back the popular tallboy! Hyundai plans to launch an all-new Santro by 2018! The Hyundai Eon, which is currently the smallest Hyundai car in India, has failed to affect sales performance of Maruti Alto. Furthermore, the Maruti WagonR continues to dominate the upper-A segment. Hence, Hyundai India could be planning to launch the all-new Santro to rival the Marutis in the entry-level market. Nothing’s currently official about the new Hyundai Santro 2017. However, we have compiled all the available details in this report here. So read on for new Hyundai Santro 2017 Launch Date, Price and Images-

Rumours abound that the new Hyundai Santro 2017 model will be launched in India by 2018. However, some of our sources at HMIL have revealed that the manufacturer has been working overtime to speed up the development of the next generation Santro. Hence, in most likelihood, the new Hyundai Santro 2017 launch date could fall in the last quarter of 2017!
Once launched, the new Santro will rival the likes of Maruti Wagon R, Chevrolet Beat and top end variants of the Renault Kwid.
New Hyundai Santro 2017 Price in India
2017 Hyundai Santro Prices (Expected) | |
2017 Hyundai Santro Era | INR 4.03 Lakhs |
2017 Hyundai Santro Magna | INR 4.37 Lakhs |
2017 Hyundai Santro Sportz | INR 4.58 Lakhs |
2017 Hyundai Santro Asta | INR 4.91 Lakhs |
Safely expect the new Santro to be priced really close to the Maruti WagonR. Our guess is that the 2017 Hyundai Santro prices could start at INR 4.00 lakhs. The top-end variant could cost close to INR 4.90.
While Hyundai’s plan to bring back the Santro remain unconfirmed, bringing back the nameplate could prove to be beneficial. Currently, the Eon and i10 are nowhere close to their competitors in terms of sales. An all new product that replaces the i10 might just be what Hyundai needs. Christening it Santro will help as the car was a strong brand name till it was sold here.

The Hyundai Santro was launched in India with a 1.0-litre engine. Over the years, the Santro was given several mechanical updates and it got a bigger 1.1-litre engine around the latter half of its career. This is the same 1.1-litre engine which was re-tuned to power the Hyundai i10 and even the Getz premium hatchback. However, for the new Hyundai Santro 2017, the manufacturer could use the Eon‘s 1.0-litre motor. This would ensure that the new Santro gets a more modern and fuel efficient engine than the old Santro.
There are slim chances of the 2017 Santro getting a Diesel heart. However, one can safely expect a CNG-powered variant that could also attract the fleet operators. Transmission options, in most likelihood, will be restricted to a 5-speed Manual Gearbox. It may be noted that the Wagon R is available with an optional AMT. However, HMIL is yet to launch AMT on any of its cars and we feel that there’s still some time before HMIL brings Automated Manual Transmissions for its India lineup.
New Hyundai Santro 2017 Mileage
2017 Hyundai Santro Mileage |
|
City | 17 KMPL |
Highway | 21 KMPL |
Overall | 19 KMPL |
The earlier Santro offered a good mix of fuel efficiency and performance and the 2017 Santro should be no different. As the engine will be shared with the Eon, the new Santro 2017 could offer up to 21 KMPL!
Design
The Hyundai Santro was the first tallboy in India. In spite of slightly oddball proportions, the Indian car market lapped up the Santro and accepted the rather unconventional design. Today, tallboys have become common in our market and hence, the Indian market shouldn’t have an issue with the 2017 Santro’s tallboy design. The next generation Santro’s design could look like an evolved version of the original car’s exterior. As we said, the pictures here are not of the next Santro. However, the new Hyundai Santro 2017 is sure to bear at least some resemblance to the earlier version.
