This latest spy shot where the Mahindra Thar is seen wrapped in a white plastic – possibly for dispatch to a dealership yard – hints at a launch very soon, probably in August!
We have been bringing you spy shots of the next-gen Mahindra Thar for over a year now and Mahindra seems to be testing the SUV for an eternity. However, this latest spy shots does not look like its under testing anymore as its not wearing a camouflage. Instead, it seems to be wrapped in a white plastic that’s usually applied to a newly built vehicle before being dispatched to dealer yards. This Thar pictured here looks production ready and we expect Mahindra to launch the SUV in our market by August this year.
As can be seen from the image, the Thar still sticks to its original design but with a lot more modernity now. The Thar always had a likable and its good that Mahindra did not tamper with it much. What’s seen properly for the first time are these new gloss-black five spoke alloy wheels in this spy image and they really seem to suit the SUV. What’s also more prominent are the new front fender claddings, the side step and also a chunky front bumper with a dedicated fog lamp housing.
The next-gen Mahindra Thar will be powered by a BS6-compliant version of Mahindra’s tried-and-tested 2.2-litre diesel engine. The engine puts out much more power now at around 140bhp and it will come mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Mahindra is even expected to offer an automatic gearbox option with the new Thar. This time around, Mahindra will also offer a new petrol engine on the Thar for the first time. This new engine will be a 2.0L turbocharged unit that belongs to Mahindra’s mStallion family of engines.

The Thar has also grown by leaps and bounds in terms of design and aesthetics. It’s no more a bare-bones rugged off-roader but comes with significantly sophisticated design elements. Its also larger than its predecessor and looks more capable than ever before. The interiors also get a completely new dashboard design. Its much more premium and will come much better equipped than its predecessor. In terms of features, the new Thar will come equipped with a touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a multi-info display in the instrument cluster, manual AC, and multiple USB ports.

We can’t wait for Mahindra to finally unveil this SUV. With all the updates, the prices will of course go up but it should still be pretty worth it. When launched, the new Mahindra Thar will continue to rival the Force Gurkha which was also updated at the 2020 Auto Expo. Apart from that, the Thar will have a brand new competitor in the Maruti Suzuki Jimny as well.
