As the EV wave grips the nation, we can brace ourselves to experience the Hyundai Creta EV as early as the beginning of next year. Unlike Hyundai’s Ioniq range, the Creta EV will be a conversion from the existing Creta with a similar platform. That is the approach we have seen Tata Motors ace with its range of electric cars. In fact, leveraging the popularity and success of the ICE model of any car is a starting point for thinking about its electric counterpart. Let us dive into the details of the latest spy shots of the Creta EV.
Hyundai Creta EV Spied
These visuals come to us courtesy of The Far Biker on YouTube. The Hyundai Creta EV is wrapped in a thick camouflage. But some of its elements and the silhouette give away its true credentials. At the front, we see the LED DRLS and the headlamp cluster much similar to the current Creta. There are LED fog lamps, a sturdy bumper and perhaps equipment for ADAS. On the sides, the easiest giveaway of its electric beginnings is the aero alloy wheels. Those are something we typically experience in many EVs around the globe.
Apart from that, the side profile hardly offers any changes to the design in comparison to the ICE model. There are compact roof rails and familiar door panels which we have seen for ages. At the rear, we again see the influence of the ICE Creta. There are LED taillamps which might be connected via a light bar, a trend we often see in modern cars, particularly those from the Korean carmaker. Interestingly, on the inside, the steering wheel will not be similar to the ICE Creta but to the Ioniq 5. It will bear the 4 dots. Being a Hyundai, it would be safe to assume that the Creta EV will get the latest tech, convenience, safety and comfort amenities to the brim and then some.
Specs
There have not been any official announcements from Hyundai about the powertrain just yet. But if online rumours are anything to go by, the Hyundai Creta EV will possess a 45 kWh battery pack which could offer a range of around 450 km on a single charge. The real-world figures will be slightly lower. Hyundai has announced a partnership with Exide for the battery. It could borrow the electric motor from the Kona which will produce 138 hp and 255 Nm of peak power and torque. More details will emerge as the launch nears.
Our View
The EV segment in India is growing at a rapid pace. The biggest player in this space is Tata Motors. However, it had the first-mover advantage which it has capitalized on quite impressively. But as we move on, more players are entering the EV space. That is where carmakers like Hyundai come into the picture. In the upper range, the Ioniq 5 has done exceedingly well. To cater to the masses, something like a Creta EV is necessary. I can promise one thing, the future of EVs is certainly exciting.
