Here is nice drag race between the new generation Honda City i-VTEC and the first-ever 20 year old Honda City. See which one is quicker.
Five generations down the line, we still adore the i-VTEC engine, the classy looks of Honda City and its premium cabin. Nothing from these have changed over the last 20 years. Of course the engine has gotten better, more refined and cleaner. But, is there a major difference between the latest model and the first City?
Here’s a drag race between the old Honda City i-VTEC and the fifth generation model. So, the first two generations came with the same 1.5 Litre i-VTEC but not with modern day technology. Also, they were good for 107 PS and the third generation model, then saw a 13 PS boost. Since then, the City produces 120 PS and 145 Nm of peak torque.

However, the first generation model is still known for its great handling characteristics and probably even better than the fifth generation. So, here, in the first round, you can see the new City gaining a quick lead. Gradually, the new City pushes ahead itself to be a winner by more than one car length.
In the second round, you can see that the drivers have been switched. And again, the new City takes the lead leaving the older generation behind. That shows improvement in the performance over the years. Also, we have new age electronics doing their deed on the latest model.
The older model was very lightweight, tipping the scales under 1000 kilograms. However, the body roll is too high and stability is also not that appreciable. But, what else can you expect from a 20 year old icon? The new City might not be as sporty looking or even performance focused as the first gen City, but is still nice to get your adrenaline pumping.

The first three versions of City came with a iVTEC engine only. The fourth generation or the 2014 City saw the introduction of a 1.5 Litre i-DTEC which is till date, one of the most fuel efficient engines of its segment. The prices of new City start at Rs 10.89 Lakhs going up to Rs 14.65 Lakhs (ex-showroom).
