The new 2017 Hyundai Verna is finally on sale in India. While the Verna continues to sit below the Elantra, it gets really close to the D-segment sedan at least in terms of features list. What is it like to pit these two Hyundai sedans against each other, we wonder? Here’s a new 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra comparison to answer that question.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra – Price Comparison
Car | Minimum Price | Maximum Price |
New 2017 Hyundai Verna | Rs 8.00 lakh | Rs 12.61 lakh |
Hyundai Elantra | Rs 13.00 lakh | Rs 19.31 lakh |
*All prices ex-showroom Delhi
The all-new Verna is likely has a starting price of Rs 8 lakh, and its top-end model costs Rs 12.61 lakh. So, basically, for a little less than the price of the base petrol Elantra, you can get a top-spec Diesel Verna, complete with an auotomatic transmission! The Elantra is priced at the lower end of the lower-D segment. At this price, some folks may deem it wise to fork out more cash and opt for the Elantra over Verna.

New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra – Specifications Comparison
Specifications | New 2017 Hyundai Verna | Hyundai Elantra |
Engine | 1.6-litre petrol/1.6 litre diesel | 2.0-litre petrol/1.6-litre diesel |
Power | Petrol – 121BHP
Diesel – 126BHP |
Petrol – 150BHP
Diesel – 126BHP |
Torque | Petrol – 154 Nm
Diesel – 265 Nm |
Petrol – 192Nm
Diesel – 260Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed MT/6-Speed AT (both engines) | 6-speed MT/6-speed AT |
The Verna gets a 1.6-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre turbo diesel motor. Also, these can be paired with either a 6-speed manual or a six-speed automatic gearbox. The Elantra’s petrol engine outguns the petrol engine 2017 Verna with healthier performance. Even the Diesel engine of the Elantra is more powerful.
The Verna sports a Super Body Structure, making use of advanced high strength steel in its construction. As a result of that, it is now lighter, more rigid, has increased crash worthiness and reduced NVH levels. This new chassis also helps the car in providing higher levels of road feedback to the driver. Reduced weight means more performance and better mileage than before too.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra – Mileage
Car | Mileage (petrol) | Mileage (diesel) |
New 2017 Hyundai Verna | 15.92 – 17.70 KMPL | 21.02 – 24.75 KMPL |
Hyundai Elantra | 14-15 KMPL | 18-22 KMPL |
The Verna’s engines quite fuel-efficient. As a result, expect the fuel bills to not burn a big hole in your pocket when you drive the new Verna. The Elantra suffers in this regard as it is the bigger car and hence, has to lug more weight around too. Still, it is pretty fuel efficient, considering it has a 2.0-litre petrol engine. The diesel engine’s fuel economy is quite good too.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra – Dimensions Comparison
Dimensions | New 2017 Hyundai Verna | Hyundai Elantra |
Length(mm) | 4,385 | 4,570 |
Width (mm) | 1,726 | 1,800 |
Height (mm) | 1,450 | 1,465 |
Wheelbase (mm) | 2,580 | 2,700 |
Now, the new Verna is bigger than the outgoing model in every dimension. This is because it is a new-generation product. However, even with all that, it cannot hope to compete against the Elantra in any physical dimension. After all, the Elantra is a more premium offering. Hence, it has to offer more space. One thing to note is that both cars roofline is just 15mm apart, favouring the Elantra. At least, the new Verna has good headroom.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra – Exterior Design
We have covered the all-new Verna’s design in great detail. Since it is an all-new product (next gen version of the current Verna), it has an all-new design and styling elements too. Design-wise, it looks more sophisticated and flamboyant than the outgoing model. In terms of styling, it gets a new bumpers, headlamps, hexagonal grille, alloy wheels and new taillamps.
The Elantra is also a new-gen product. It also has the same Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language as the new 2017 Hyundai Verna. However, its design feels sharper and tauter than that of the 2017 Verna. The hexagonal grille is there up front. There are projector headlamps with LED DRLs and projector foglamps. Not to miss is the bumper design which has a neat aero trick that forms an air curtain over front wheels to minimise drag. The 10-spoke alloy wheels with gunmetal finish look expensive. At the rear, there are LED taillamps and an integrated decklid spoiler. In terms of exterior design, there are few cars that pull flamboyance and elegance in quite the same way as the Elantra. The new 2017 Verna comes close but is not quite there.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra – Interior Design
The new Verna’s interior has a redesigned dashboard. There is a new steering wheel with revised button layout. The dashboard itself gets a dual-tone beige-black colour treatment. There are faux brushed aluminium inserts on the car’s dashboard. You can see the inserts on the steering wheel, around A/c vents on sides and surrounding the infotainment unit. Speaking of the infotainment unit, the 2017 Verna gets new 7-inch touchscreen system that is the highlight of the dashboard. Elsewhere, the door panels get dual-tone treatment. The seats sport beige-coloured leather with black inserts on the sides.
The Elantra has a mono-tone dashboard with faux brushed aluminium inserts on the steering, around A/c vents, and on HVAC controls too. One such piece runs across the breadth of the dashboard, dividing it in two parts. The faux aluminium inserts can be found on the door trims too. The rest of the interior is shod in black colour too. However, even without the all-new Verna’s dual-tone interior treatment, the Elantra’s interior feels expensive.
New 2017 Hyundai Verna vs Hyundai Elantra Comparison – Conclusion
Price – Obviously, the Elantra is pricier. But you can buy an entry-level Petrol Elantra for the price of a top-spec Verna Diesel.
Specifications – The new Verna offers two engine options – one petrol and one diesel. However, even though Elantra offers less engine options, its engines are quite punchy. In fact, its 2.0-litre petrol engine pushes out 150BHP. Buyers may find it hard to resist that kind of power output.
Mileage – The mileage of the two cars is comparable. The Elantra’s mileage is on the lower side as it is the bigger car and hence has to haul more weight around. However, the mileage of its diesel engine is comparable to that of the new Verna’s.
Dimensions – Hands down, the Elantra is the bigger car here. It has to play in a more premium market space while the Verna does not have to. However, Hyundai could have taken a page out of Maruti Ciaz‘s book while designing the new 2017 Verna. That would have benefited the new car in terms of physical dimensions.
Design – Both cars’ design is great. The all-new 2017 Verna’s design is quite good. In fact, it is good enough for the car to hang in the company of Elantra. Inside too, while Hyundai could have gone for same mono-tone treatment for the 2017 Verna just like that on Elantra, the former’s dual-tone interior does give it a sense of luxury.
