We have spotted a Mahindra Thar which has been uniquely modified into a pickup truck. Thar is a popular off-roader. It comes with immense hardcore capabilities to get the owners across any obstacle. It is the most popular SUV in this segment in India. However, the Indian auto giant is planning to launch a more practical 5-door version. It aims to eliminate the issue of a lack of boot space and ingress/egress characteristics of the current model. But there are some people who customize their cars in the aftermarket. Here is one such example.

Mahindra Thar Modified into Pickup Truck
This post comes from autojournal_india on Instagram. It captures a unique iteration of the Mahindra Thar in real life. One owner decided to get rid of the rear seats completely to liberate loads of luggage space. As a result, he/she took the SUV and installed a hardtop to cover the rear section and boot compartment. The final product looks somewhat similar to the Getaway pickup which was offered in our market a few years ago as a pickup version of the Scorpio. Also, there have been similar modifications on some Gypsy cars from back in the day.

What We Think
While there are some people online who think that Mahindra will launch such a version of the Thar, we don’t think so. The number of customers for a 2-seat pickup truck in India can’t be too high. It won’t make business sense for the Indian auto giant. This is particularly true since the regular Thar is already selling so well. Mahindra doesn’t have to take the risk of bringing a pickup truck version of the Thar. Instead, in fact, it is focusing on the 5-door version of the Thar to make it more practical. This is important after the arrival of the 5-door Maruti Jimny recently. It has taken the market by storm. The 5-door guise of the Thar will be a direct rival to it.
