Loneliness seems to be a bigger problem in this modern age than many might want to acknowledge. As a result, people are resorting to unprecedented solutions.
A video has been going viral which mentions that a Microsoft employee drives autorickshaw on the weekends to kill his loneliness. I must admit this is the first time I have heard about a professional from a top company doing this job as the weekend gig. While many might attribute this to the modern mindset of devising multiple ways to generate additional income, the real reason behind this is potentially more dangerous. Let us delve deep into the specifics of this case.
Microsoft Employee Drives Autorickshaw
A certain X user, Venkatesh Gupta, shared this image on social media. The caption of this post said, “Met a 35 year old staff software engineer at Microsoft in Kormangala driving Namma Yatri to combat loneliness on weekends.” This post has been reported by many top news publications in the country. The senior Microsoft engineer has taken up this job to counter his loneliness on the weekends. Interestingly, spotting techies indulge in part-time weekend gigs like driving taxis or delivery bikes is not uncommon in Bengaluru.
That is a vivid indication of how some big jobs in new cities can become critical for the personal health and well-being of the employees. I understand that this is not the case with a vast majority of people. Still, when people come to a new city, experiencing loneliness is understandable. Not to mention, the netizens were quick to point out that inflation is also causing a lot of regular working professionals to take up weekend hobbies and side hustles to make ends meet. That is a real problem as well. Most jobs are barely paying enough to meet the increasing prices of commodities.
Our View
Despite this case being extreme, I would like to make our readers aware of the fact that this is just an isolated incident and not the norm. While people with jobs in relatively smaller companies might do this rather frequently, a senior engineer at a firm like Microsoft can’t possibly do this out of necessity. Hence, the more serious topic for discussion here is loneliness. While we live in a world of connectivity, some people can still feel isolated. As a result, they have to resort to such unusual activities. Let us keep an eye out for more such cases going forward and talk about this issue.
