With the addition of the Astor, MG Motor India now caters to a wide range of SUV buyers with competent products positioned across many segments of the market
MG Motor India commenced its local innings with the Hector in 2019. Over the last few years, the carmaker’s product portfolio has grown exponentially with the introduction of models such as the ZS EV, Hector Plus, Gloster and, more recently, the Astor. The carmaker has even been quick to update the Hector with a facelift that arrived in 2020. All the new launches have surely helped the company set a firmer foot in the market with a decent demand for almost all its products.

In January 2022, the company sold 4,306 units, thereby clocking an MoM growth of a whopping 69% over December 2021. It even registered a decent 20% growth over the corresponding month of 2021. The growth has been recorded in spite of the global semiconductor shortage that has affected all carmakers. This acute shortage is likely to persist for now but MG Motor is confident that the situation would start improving by the second half of 2022.

Deliveries of the MG Astor started in November 2021 and the crossover has been petty quick with making SUV buyers look up and take notice. The new models’ claim to fame is its segment-best features, particularly the Level-2 ADAS that is not on offer on any car across many segments. The Astor even impresses with a strong performance from its 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine and segment-first personal assistant. Other than attracting the interest of many potential SUV buyers with the new offering, the carmaker continues to enjoy a decent demand for the Hector. On the other hand, with the discontinuation of the Ford Endeavour, the MG Gloster plays the only rival to the highly popular Toyota Fortuner.

The MG ZS EV has completed two years in the fast-expanding Indian EV market. In words of the carmaker, the ZS EV has been “the hallmark of the brand’s commitment to sustainable mobility” in India. The electric car has already found more than 4,000 buyers and the premium EV’s success in the country gives us a glimpse of the future demand for electric four-wheelers.
