MG Hector vs Mahindra XUV500 comparison on paper. Let’s see how they fare against each other.
MG Motors just launched the Hector at a price of Rs 12.18 lakh (ex-showroom). The company has already started mass production of the SUV at its Halol plant as was already reported earlier.
The Hector rivals against the likes of the newly launched Tata Harrier, the Jeep Compass and Kia Seltos.
Here we take a closer look at how the Hector fares against the XUV500, the most popular SUV in this segment.
MG Hector vs Mahindra XUV500 – Engine Specification (Petrol)
Model | Mahindra XUV500 | MG Hector |
Engine | 2.2L, mHawk engine | 1.5L, Multi-air, turbocharged engine |
Power | 140 Bhp | 143 Bhp |
Torque | 320 Nm | 250 Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed Automatic | 6-speed manual/7-speed DCT |
The Hector is powered by a 1.5L, turbocharged, petrol engine which produces 143 Bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. When compared to the Mahindra XUV500’s petrol engine, the latter is powered by a 2.2L, petrol engine producing 140 Bhp and 320 Nm of torque.
The MG Hector is slightly more powerful than the equivalent Mahindra XUV500 petrol and that too from a smaller engine. The Hector is certainly the more fuel efficient of the two. However, the Mahindra XUV500 does have quite a lot more torque than the Hector. The XUV500 only gets a 6-speed automatic while the Hector gets a 6-speed manual and also a 7-speed DCT. The Hector will also come with the petrol engine mated to a mild-hybrid system, so expect even more fuel economy in that variant.
MG Hector vs Mahindra XUV500 – Engine Specification (Diesel)
Model | Mahindra XUV500 | MG Hector |
Engine | 2.2L, mHawk engine | 2.0L, Multi-Jet engine |
Power | 155 Bhp | 170 Bhp |
Torque | 360 Nm | 350 Nm |
Transmission | 6-speed manual/automatic transmission | 6-speed manual transmission |
The MG Hector also comes with a 2.0L diesel unit which already does duty in the Jeep Compass. The engine produces 170 Bhp Bhp and 350 Nm of torque. The Mahindra XUV500 comes with a bigger 2.2L mHawk diesel unit which produces 155 Bhp and 360 Nm of torque. Again, the Hector is slightly more powerful but torque figures are roughly the same. The Mahindra has the option of both manual and automatic transmissions while the MG only gets a manual.

Dimensions
Dimensions | Mahindra XUV500 | MG Hector |
Length | 4,585 mm | 4,655 mm |
Width | 1,890 mm | 1,835 mm |
Height | 1,785 mm | 1,760 mm |
Wheelbase | 2,700 mm | 2,750 mm |
In terms of dimensions, the Hector is slightly longer than the XUV500 and thus has a longer wheelbase than the XUV500. In fact, the Hector has class-leading interior space. However, the XUV500 sits higher and is wider than the Hector.
Design
In terms of design, the Hector clearly has the edge over the XUV500. The XUV500 has been on Indian roads for quite some time now and its design has evolved over the years but is still quite rounded and plain. On the other hand, the MG Hector brings a fresh new design to the palate of mid-sized SUVs and it looks very contemporary with sharp lines and an upright stance.
On the interiors, while the Mahindra XUV500 comes decently well equipped, material quality does not feel all that good with a lot of hard touch plastics. The Hector on the other hand, is loaded to the brim with smart technology and the materials used inside the car are also better than the XUV500. The Hector easily has the more premium cabin of the two.
