With the MG Hector launch, this segment might just see a new benchmark and it might turn out to be a very popular SUV as the Hector seems very promising.
MG Motors has finally announced the launch date of the Hector to be on the June 27, 2019. The new MG Hector is MG Motor’s first product in India and one of the many connected cars that are coming into our market. The MG Hector will be offered in four trims – Style, Super, Smart and Sharp and it will come very well loaded right from the base trim. It will rival the likes of the Tata Harrier, the Jeep Compass and the new Kia Seltos which was just unveiled yesterday.
An SUV was probably the best way MG Motors could have entered the Indian market. But that’s not the only highlight about MG’s first car in India. It is one of the most feature rich vehicles in the segment. The connected technology in the Hector is called the i-Smart system which is an integrated solution that combines software, hardware, connectivity, services and application. It has been developed in collaboration with Cisco, Unlimit, and Microsoft among others.
The iSmart connectivity system comes with advanced technology, smart application, in-built Apps, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Smart Features, Voice Assist, and Infotainment. The Volvo-like vertically-mounted 10.4-inch Full-HD infotainment display is the control unit for all your in-car functions. It also comes with pre-loaded entertainment which will get updated over the air as time goes by.
But the connected car technology is not the only reason why we are calling it feature rich. The top-spec Hector will come with a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, tyre pressure monitoring system, automatic headlamps, cruise control, power adjustable driver and co-driver seats with tilt and telescopic steering adjustments.
On the safety front, the MG Hector gets six-airbags on the top-end trim, four on the middle-trim and two as standard, even on the base variants. It also gets traction control, hill hold assist and ABS as standard fitments on all variants. The top-spec model also comes with 360 degree camera along with parking sensors as well.
The MG Hector is also very generous on space. Its quite a big car for the segment it is sitting in. The Hector measure 4,655 mm in lenght with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, That’s the biggest in the segment. The width is 1,835 mm and it has a height of 1,760 mm. With a ground clearance of 198 mm, it feels high on its feet like a proper SUV.

The Hector will be offered with three engine options. There will be a 1.5-litre petrol, 1.5-litre petrol hybrid and 2.0-litre diesel engine. Both the petrol engines are the same 1451 cc, four-cylinder turbocharged unit making 141 bhp and 250 Nm of peak torque. The hybrid variant comes with an added belt starter generator, a 48V battery and regenerative braking and gets only the 6-speed manual gearbox.
As for the diesel model, the MG Hector is powered by the Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that churns out 168 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque. The engine is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard. This is the same engine that does duty in the Jeep Compass.
