MG Motors first product for the Indian market, a compact premium MPV will be named as the Hector. Based on the Baojun 530, the name Hector takes its inspiration from the Trojan warrior Prince Hector. This SUV is expected to be priced in-between the range of INR 15 lakh to INR 20 lakh. With this, it will compete against the likes of Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and the Hyundai Tucson. MG Motors is going to manufacture this compact premium SUV in India itself at its plant based in Halol, Gujarat. The MG Hector is going to have 75% localization. Based on the automaker’s global platform, the Hector has been thoroughly re-engineered for the Indian market.

The Hector is going to compete against the likes of Tata Harrier, Jeep Compass and the Mahindra XUV5OO when it makes its debut in India. Since its fall in the segment of sub-premium compact SUVs, we are expecting the same to adorn a starting price tag of INR 15 lakh with the top-end variant retailing close to INR 20 lakh (ex-showroom). Anything more than this will make it unreasonable and might put a tag of ‘too expensive’ on it.

The exact engine specifications of the Morris Garages Hector are yet to be revealed by the automaker. However, there have been a number of speculations stating that the Hector is going to come with a Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre, Multi-Jet unit. This engine is the same unit which currently performs its duty on the Jeep Compass. That said, the same engine will be available in its BS-VI guise in Hector. The power and torque figures of this engine are likely to stand at 170 BHP and 350 Nm respectively. This engine is going to be offered in a manual as well as automatic transmission options.
Details regarding the petrol engine of the MG hector are still a topic of debate. There is a chance that the automaker might use Fiat’s 1.4-litre, Multi-Air unit which currently powers the petrol derivative of the Jeep Compass. In

Since the exact engine specifications of the Hector are still under the wraps, we cannot comment on this SUV’s exact fuel-efficiency figures. However, if speculations turn out to be true and this compact SUV arrives in India with the above-mentioned engine specifications then, going by that, we can say that the diesel derivative of the Hector is going to promise a fuel-efficiency figure of around 17-18 km/l. On the other hand, expect a fuel-efficiency figure of around 12-14 km/l from the petrol derivative of this SUV.

The MG Hector is based on the same underpinnings as that of the Baojun 530 sold in the Chinese market. Hence, in terms of its exterior measurements, this SUV is likely to match with the former. As a result of which, the Hector is likely to measure 4,655 mm in length, 1,835 mm in width and 1,760 mm in height. It is expected to come with a ground clearance of around 200 mm.
