At the recently concluded Bharat Mobility Expo 2024, Maruti Suzuki displayed a methane-powered Brezza compact SUV. This variant is called the Compressed Biomethane Gas (CBG). It bears the same exterior and interior styling as the regular Brezza. However, the body of the compact SUV contains badges highlighting its CBG credentials. In addition to this, the largest carmaker in the country also showcased the eVX (electric SUV), flex-fuel WagonR and an electric air taxi. It is clear that Maruti is focusing on alternative fuel sources to power the future of its mobility.

The SUV on display at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2024 was red in colour with a black roof and black alloy wheels. This dual-tone combination lends it a sporty appearance. The broad side body skirting and rugged front bumper along with the skid plate accentuates its adventurous side. Apart from that, the black roof and side pillars give it that floating roof effect. There are stickers confirming its CBG powertrain. At the rear, we see the roof rails, sturdy skid plate black highlights around the LED taillamps and a roof-mounted spoiler.

Specs
As the name suggests, this compact SUV draws power from Compressed Biomethane Gas. This means that it still bears the 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine as the regular Brezza, but this model generates 87 hp and 121 Nm of peak power and torque. The only transmission option with this engine is a 5-speed manual. That is in line with other CNG models that Maruti Suzuki offers in India. Hence, there is a slight reduction in power and torque in comparison to its petrol counterpart. But the running costs will be low.

Author’s Note
Maruti Suzuki is certainly late to the EV party. Its first electric SUV, eVX, is still some time away from launch. However, to compensate for that, it is focusing its energy and resources on the development of vehicles which run on alternate fuels. For instance, its CNG car portfolio is the largest in India. Going forward, it looks like it will explore more such options. The launch of this Brezza can occur in the coming months. Let us see how well the customers receive it.
