As promised, Mercedes-Benz has started local production of the popular Mercedes M-Class at its Chakan, Pune plant, which is also the first M-Class production facility outside its SUV plant in USA. The set-up to be used for M-Class production is also unique in itself as it sets benchmarks with new assemble lines, synchronised conveyor systems, latest technology roller tester, dynamic shower tester, etc.
Beside the localized production (with some localization) of the M-Class, another very important addition is the new state of the art paint shop which is fully equipped with high-tech labs, intelligent conveyor systems and automated robotic painting.
Coming back to the M-Class now, the car has been quite successful in India with an estimated 2000 units of the same sold in our market. Available now in 250 CDI variant, the 2.2 litre W166 engine puts out a maximum torque of 500 Nm at 1600 – 1800 RPM and a rated output of 203 BHP at 4200 RPM. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in mere 9 seconds and attains a top speed of 210 km/h.
Some of the highlighting features of the car are Bi Xenon Head lamps with LED daytime running lamps, an Intelligent Light System (ILS) including cornering lights, headlamp washer and adaptive high beam assist, Electric Sunroof, 18” ten spoke light alloy wheels, electric powered seats with 4 way lumbar support, POPLAR wood trim, a soothing Ambient Lighting and the Storage Package further adds to the convenience.
Safety features list includes anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Stability Program (ESP) Acceleration Skid Control, Brake Assist, 7 air–bags, PRE-SAFE technology, ECO start-stop function, ATTENTION ASSIST, an Electric Parking Brake and Active Parking Assist, EURO NCAP 5 Star rating, Reverse Park Assist etc.
