The Mercedes Benz A-Class sedan will be locally assembled at the brand’s Chakan Plant which will give the car a competitive pricing (Rs 32-40 lakhs expected) when its launched later in the year.
Mercedes Benz has quite a few exciting products lined up for India in the year ahead. One among them is the new A-Class sedan. Mercedes Benz has been evaluating bringing the A-Class sedan in India since early 2019. Now, they are finally going to showcase the A-Class sedan at the 2020 Auto Expo to gauge customer interest before launching it later in the year.
There are not much specific details about the India-spec Mercedes Benz A-Class as of yet but we do know that the car will be locally assembled at the brand’s Chakan Plant. It will be assembled alongside other models that it shares its platform with, such as the next-generation CLA and GLA. There were even rumors that the A-Class sedan would replace the CLA in India as the latter isn’t the most practical offering in India as the four-door coupe’s raked roofline eats into rear space. However, Mercedes has recently confirmed the launch of the next-gen CLA in 2020 itself.
The next-gen CLA, GLA and the A-Class sedan are all underpinned by the same platvfrom – next generation of Mercecdes’s MFA platform. Naturally, there will be a lot of parts sharing among these three cars when they arrive here as CKD (completely knocked down) units. That includes the petrol and diesel engines, several interior components, trims and steering wheel and also the infotainment system software. This will allow Mercedes to price the cars quite competitively as economies of scale will come to play. The A-Class could be expected to priced in the Rs. 32-40 lakhs region.

The A-Class sedan in India will be offered in the standard 2,729mm-long wheelbase version. There is a long wheelbase version – 60mm longer than the standard – that’s on offer in certain market, but that wouldn’t be making its way to India. The Mercedes Benz A-Class sedan shares a lot of exterior and interior design details with the newer crop of Mercedes cars and thats’s a great thing. The interior dashboard layout and styling elements on the exterior are quite familiar but it still makes a strong case for itself.

While we do not have the exact details of the powertrain options that Mercedes would offer on the A-Class sedan in India, but the international model gets a range of petrol (from 136 to 224hp) and diesel (116 to 190hp) engine options. Apart from the A-Class sedan, Mercedes has an entire array of new vehicles which are going to be launched in India. That includes the new Mercedes GLB – which also shares the MFA platform with the A-Class. Then there’s the next-gen GLE, the next-gen GLE coupe, the EQC in April and also the GLS and the four-door AMG GT.
