The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe comes to India as a replacement for the previous-gen GLE 43 Coupe. This is also the first time that a 53 Series AMG model has come to India. It should thus have the right mix of performance, practicality and of course style.
Mercedes Benz has today launched their forth AMG model in India this year. Following the launch of the Mercedes C63 AMG and the stunning, AMG GT R, Mercedes-AMG has now launched the GLE 53 Coupe in India for a price of Rs 1.20 crore (ex-showroom). This is the first time than an AMG 53 model has made its way to India and it comes as a replacement for the previous-gen GLE 43 Coupe. The Mercedes-AMG Gle 53 Coupe offers a great mix of performance, practicality and style like no other. Let’s look at it in a little more detail.
The new GLE Coupe is larger than its predecessor and its wheelbase has also grown by 20mm. Apart from larger dimensions, the GLE 53 Coupe has the typical Merc SUV-Coupe design language and just like its predecessor, its heavily draws design details from the standard GLE SUV. The B-Pillar onwards however, the roofline slopes down quite sharply into a distinctive rear end with an integrated spoiler. This being an AMG model, it gets its due share of aggressiveness in the from of the Panamerica grille, 21-inch alloy wheels, huge air dams on the front bumper, a diffuser and quad-AMG exhausts.
This being an AMG, what’s most important is under the hood. Being a 53 AMG, the GLE 53 Coupe is powered by a in-line, six-cylinder, twin-turbo petrol engine instead of a full-blown V8 engine as in the 63 models. This engine produces 435PS of power and 520Nm of twist. The engine comes mated to an 9-speed automatic transmission and it further gets an additional EQ electric boost mild-hybrid system that is further capable of providing 22PS and 250Nm in short bursts. 0-100 kph comes up in just 5.3 seconds while top-speed is limited to 250 kph. Naturally, it also gets Mercedes’ 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.

There are some mechanical upgrades on this SUV-Coupe, for this being an AMG. The Mercedes GLE 53 rides on air suspension with adaptive dampers and it also gets uprated brakes to handle all that extra power. You get four driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and also Individual (it lets you select your own settings). The GLE 53 Coupe also comes with Merc’s Active Ride Control system, which reduces body roll and improves ride when required. On the inside, the GLE 53 Coupe’s cabin gets some AMG-specific touches in the form of an AMG flat-bottom steering, AMG front sport seats and stainless-steel pedals, to name a few.

Most standard features have been carried on from the regular GLE SUV. The dashboard is thus dominated by dual 12.3-inch screens for the infotainment and instrument cluster, with both running on Merc’s latest MBUX system. It also gets four-zone climate control, a 13-speaker Burmester sound system, head-up display, heated and ventilated front seats with memory function and four-way lumbar support, 64 color ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, connected car tech with remote engine start, wireless phone charger, and powered tailgate. Some of the standard safety features include Nine airbags, a blind spot monitor, a 360 degree camera, ESP and adaptive LED headlights. The Mercedes GLE 53 Coupe rivals the likes of the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, BMW X6 and Audi Q8 in India.
