Fresh reports now confirm that Maruti is planning to launch the XL5, Grand Vitara and Jimny in India, for sure. However, it will happen over the next two years.
Finally, we have some confirmed reports coming in talking about Maruti Suzuki and its future lineup. From a long time, there are a couple of Maruti cars that have been rumoured for the Indian market. We all know which ones and the latest report from Emkay Global Financial Services confirms that Maruti is planning to bring in the Jimny, XL5 and a new SUV to India over the next two years.
We have been hearing about the Maruti Jimny from the past two years and also about the Grand Vitara. While Maruti has kept this secret for too long now, fresh reports confirm that they are indeed planning for new and most anticipated launches. The manufacturer is planning to launch the Jimny, WagonR-based XL5 and a new mid-size SUV that will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
As per the new report, Maruti plans to launch these three new models in India by 2022. There’s still some confusion regarding XL5, whether it will be the Stingray version of the new WagonR or the 7-seater version. The report suggests that it will be a 7-seater WagonR, which has already been spied testing a lot of times. The long-awaited Jimny has also been confirmed in this development.

Maruti Jimny 3-door version was showcased at the Auto Expo 2020, where the officials confirmed that it will come to India. However, to make it more practical, Jimny for India will be a 5-door version. It will replace the Maruti Gypsy which was discontinued two years back due to the safety norms. Lastly, there’s also some news on a brand new SUV from MSIL which will come in the 10-15 Lakhs range.
It was time for Maruti to bring in its SUV to compete against Kia Seltos, Tata Harrier and Hyundai Creta. While the dimensions of S-Cross are similar to the Creta, it is still slotted a level below it in terms of pricing. The new SUV will be around 4.2 metres to 4.3 metres long and probably go with the Grand Vitara name. With these three new launches, Maruti Suzuki will enter a new level of competition.
Additionally, the report also confirms that Maruti is planning to bring back its diesel engines. The 1.5 Litre DDiS 225 unit which is an in-house developed motor, will make a comeback sometime next year. All the small cars will still continue with a petrol engine only. Models like Vitara Brezza, XL6, S-Cross, Ciaz and the upcoming SUV will be recipients of this BS6 compliant diesel engine.

Maruti Jimny will recapture the position of the most affordable lifestyle/off-roader SUV that was earlier taken up by Gypsy. As for the XL5, it will be priced in the 5 Lakhs to 8 Lakhs range and be a direct competition to Renault Triber. The latter is already a popular MPV in the market due to its practicality in spacing, mileage and pricing. The XL5 will borrow its engine from WagonR itself, along with the features list.
